Children's Emergency
Shelter Update

The efforts in building the Cherokee County Emergency Shelter for Children continues to make progress. The land was donated by Universal Alloy in Canton, and the Shelter recently received the approval of the Community Block Grant in the amount of $500,000. This is in addition to the various contributions of local churches, businesses and civic organizations. Members of the Cherokee Child Advocacy Board are working with architects to design the 16-bed facility.

The McGuinness family of Towne Lake Hills recently went on a photo safari in South Africa and brought along The TowneLaker for the ride. Steve McGuinness also brought The TowneLaker to Mount Kilamanjaro, which was featured in our June, 2005 issue.

Local Merry Maids Celebrates Ninth Anniversary

Merry Maids in Cherokee County recently celebrated its ninth anniversary. The Cherokee branch is owned by Kathy and David Lyons. "I'm very proud to be the owner of Merry Maids in Cherokee," said Kathy. "Thanks to all of our customers for making our success possible. We look forward to working with all of them long into the future," she continued.

Local Octogenarian Displays Art at Kennesaw

Roger Sloan recently had three pieces of his artwork chosen and displayed at the Sturgis Library Gallery at Kennesaw State University. Mr. Sloan excels at woodworking and as of recent, painting. What makes this situation unique is that Mr. Sloan is 80 years old and only took up painting four years ago. Mr. Sloan was diagnosed with neuropathy, which is a failure of the nerves that carry information to and from the brain and spinal cord. This disease has resulted in the limited use of his left arm, but he is still able to paint. The exhibit at Kennesaw had more than 100 entries and only 55 pieces were chosen. All three of Mr. Sloan's entries were selected.

Free Course Offered
for Teen Drivers

The Georgia Traffic Injury Prevention Institute is sponsoring a free, two-hour course for teens, ages 14 - 16 and their parents. The course will teach the young drivers what they will need to do during the 40 hours of supervised practice driving time. This is a program which addresses driver attitude, knowledge and behavior rather than a technical hands-on driving course. The first class will be held on Thursday, August 25, and the second on Thursday, October 27. Registration is required as space is limited and the class is first come, first serve. For more information, please call (678) 493-6241 or (770) 7210-6606 or visit www.ridesafegeorgia.org.
