CHEROKEE COUNTY
SITE FOR VETERANS NATIONAL CEMETARY

Cherokee County has been selected as the site for the Veterans National Cemetery. The scheduled open date for the cemetery is sometime in late 2003. The 750-acre site is located in the Sutalee Community near Cartersville and was donated by the late Scott Hudgins. Hudgins was an entrepreneur, a philanthropist and a World War II veteran. The construction of a road from Highway 20 West to the site is under negotiation, and a design and construction company should be chosen by October of this year.

Cherokee County has contributed one million dollars toward this construction. The federal government has appropriated two million dollars towards the cemetery and is estimated to spend $28 million more on the entire project. According to County Commissioner Ilona Sanders, the total value of the completed project will be approximately $50 million.

The site is in a beautiful area with breathtaking views from all around. Each ridge top of the site will be dedicated to a particular war time period, one for Vietnam, World War II, etc. The local government is honored that Cherokee County will be the resting place of men and women who fought for our freedom.
