Three years ago I
became the editor of The TowneLaker and took over the responsibility of
writing Around Towne. As an unseasoned writer I merely presented the facts.
This shopping center was opening, that neighborhood was nearing build-out,
look forward to a new restaurant, etc. Our publisher, Don, told me that
I was making the readers snore. So I began to try to inject pithy commentary.
Being pithy and commenting is what I do best.
I've never been at a loss for an opinion and have always looked for a
listening audience. This was a dream come true. And, for better or worse,
"Around Towne" had forever changed.
This month I sat at my computer for hours
- just staring at the screen. There was nothing pithy, humorous or insightful
that I could write about our flag-lined streets. I wrote this column five,
six times over, starting each time with a fresh page, a new angle. But
still, what could I say? I have no words to describe the amazing sadness,
stillness and the spirit of unity that fills Towne Lake. I'll never cease
to be amazed at our capacity for kindness. From companies that spent fortunes
handing out flags to children going door-to-door to raise money —-
there simply aren't words.
So, this month, I give you images Around
Towne —- the true statement of who we are and what is happening
here.
