Pathfinders
of the Year
2001

Do not follow where
the path may lead.
Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

Mary Beth & Ken Hunter

This year, The TowneLaker and Sixes Living Magazine selected a couple as the "Pathfinder of the Year." Recognizing one without the other would be telling only half the story.

Mary Beth and Ken Hunter have been married for 21 years, and are the proud parents of Melissa (17) and Stephen (14). Ken works as a manager at IBM and Mary Beth works for MUST, Inc. in Canton, supplementing their income with night shifts as a nurse. She recently has taken a new position with MUST as Director of Outreach and Education. She also meets with and assists families placed in transitional housing in Canton with money management and career advancement. They attend Hillside United Methodist Church and are active in their children's activities.

Sounds like a pretty normal Towne Lake family, right? Well, the story doesn't stop there. In addition to being very devoted parents, they are both constant volunteers. Ken has spent countless hours volunteering his time to Boy Scout Troup 639 and many other areas in the Boy Scout orgnanization. Ken has been asked on several occaisions to consider a district level position with the Boy Scouts, but to date has graciously declined.

Ken also has given many gifts of mercy and help over the years. He is the owner of a flatbead trailer which is stored on the property of Hillside. In exchange for storage space, Ken loans the trailer to anyone who needs to move something. The catch is along with the use of the trailer comes the use of Ken, who kindly offers his help to all.

Ken currently serves as the Chairman of Technical Ministries at Hillside as well, where he volunteers numerous hours. Ken

works with all the video and technical needs of the Church and oversees 10 - 15 volunters in that area.

Ken has also volunteered many hours to MUST and recently volunteered to transport a 24-foot refrigerated truck full of food donations to Lawrenceville.

Mary Beth's comment on Ken says it all, "Ken does what needs to be done quietly."

Mary Beth previously served as a Girl Scout Leader and is currently a Girl Scout Project Consultant. She recently published a handout to assist Girl Scout Leaders in getting their troups involved in community service.

Mary Beth is very involved in her Church and is a member of the Choir and Praise Team and has been cast as part of the ensemble in the Church's Christmas Musical. She leads an adult Sunday School class and is a certified layspeaker with the North Georgia Conference. She is also a member of the Altar Guild and truly enjoys arranging flowers for the church once a month.

Ken's comment on Mary Beth says it all as well, "Mary Beth is always willing to help out where ever she is needed. Her biggest job is being a busy mom and putting up with me and two teenagers."

Mary Beth and Ken are truly pathfinders, setting a wonderful example for all of us about the importance family, community and volunteerism.

Mary Beth and Ken, for all you do, we thank you!

A family that plays together . . .
