Get Involved
in Scouting
The Boy Scouts
of America, founded in 1910, was formed to provide an educational program
for boys and young adults to build character, to train in the responsibilities
of participating citizenship, and to develop personal fitness. Girl Scouts
of America, founded in 1912 in Savannah, Georgia, started with a membership
of only 18 girls.
In recognition of the 90th anniversary of
Girl Scouts and 92nd anniversary of Boy Scouts, The TowneLaker magazine
takes a look at some of the many volunteers as well as the scouts themselves.
Because of a shortage of volunteers, a number
of girls and boys who wanted to participate in scouting didn't have the
opportunity this year. If you'd like to spend more quality time with your
children, find out more about scouting or how you can help, call the Girl
Scout Council at (404) 577-7500 or the Boy Scouts of America at (404)
577-4810.

"You just can't
say enough about the Scout leaders in Cherokee County, they are all very
much involved in the Scouting Program, wanting to see each boy reap the
benefits of Scouting. So often I see a common thread with troubled youth,
be it drug related, not staying in school, just bored or having too much
idle time. Boys involved in the Scouts rarely, not always but most of
the time, do not fall into this because through Scouting they have role
models, direction, and values. The leaders devote countless hours of their
own time to guide and train these boys."
- Superior Court Judge Frank Mills.
