Around Towne

Thousand Acre Woods

Did you know that some Cherokee folks who have lived here all their lives call what is now Towne Lake the "Thousand Acre Woods?" Did you know there is a group of citizens, FUN (Friends Using Nature), who is proposing to save what might be the last bit of land in Towne Lake?

The Board of Education owns 20 acres in Wyngate that it has deemed unsuitable for development of a school. However, several residential developers have their eye on it to build more homes. This land is an important watershed for the pollution that flows into this heavily polluted section of Lake Allatoona. It is also one of the last large greenspaces in Towne Lake.

The Cherokee County Commissioners have the funds from the state to purchase Cherokee greenspace. Although this land has been a hot topic in the past, the Commissioners haven't heard much about it from residents lately. Therefore, they think that it is not important to the residents. Please contact the Commissioners today by email, fax or phone, to tell them that you want them to put this parcel at the top of their list for purchase.

FUN is asking anyone who would like to have a place for walking, biking, running or just to enjoy nature in some of the most pristine woods in Cherokee County to get involved. A public meeting has been planned to discuss the possibility of creating an extensive nature trail system for Towne Lake. This meeting will be held Tuesday, April 23 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Rose Creek Library. For more information, contact Felicia McAleer at (770) 516-7885 or feliciamcaleer@msn.com.
