What a Weekend!!! Henderson Village
By Susan Kyle

as treats for these "residents." Molly loves animals, and we loved how freely she could roam about the property with no fear of cars. Also, there is a tropical aviary with several varieties of exotic birds. Last but not least, there is Angus, the golden retriever mix owned by General Manager Stuart MacPherson. What a treat. We had barely arrived and Angus came over and laid right at Molly's feet. He is the official greeter. While we were dining, we noticed he was on the grass outside the window. We were grateful for his hospitality. A pet friendly place, family pets are welcome in the tenant cottages.

We had a fantastic gourmet dinner at the award winning Langston House Restaurant prepared by Chef Garry Kenley. He uses local produce and has his own herb garden on-site. Chef Kenley started cooking in his native Scotland as a teenager. He describes his cuisine as "Southern with a European twist." Also, we were impressed with their extensive wine list. Chef Kenley mentioned they will be having wine dinners with top Atlanta chefs in the fall. Carriage rides are included for all guests for an after supper ride through the village, free of charge on Saturday evenings. The carriage is authentic from the turn of the century, complete with lap blanket on chilly nights.

Recently my husband and I, together with our 18 month-old daughter Molly, visited Henderson Village in Perry, Georgia. One Townelaker became engaged there after a romantic proposal in the rose garden, another family reported it's where they go to reconnect and relax, and one couple celebrated their anniversary on an overnight stay over the holidays. With all the buzz, I wanted to check it out for myself. I am so glad we did.

Just under a two hour drive from Atlanta, this discovery amazed us. There were the same amenities found at other fine hotels such as feather beds, silver on the tables, robes and herbal bath salts. Some truly unexpected delights also came our way. We enjoyed a complimentary room service breakfast on our private veranda, huge shade trees, picket-fenced gardens, antique claw-footed bath tubs, fireplaces, a gracious staff and most of all, a feeling of incredible tranquility when we passed through the gates that made it hard to believe we were so close to home.

On road trips long ago, before everyone traveled by interstate, there were many beautiful old houses on country roads. Henderson Village is the ultimate in nostalgia. The authentic integrity of the historical aspects of this country resort just add to the whole package. There is not a contrived feel like so many other places we have seen. It's like a dearly missed great-aunt's house meeting the Ritz.

There are 24 rooms and suites. The interiors are an eclectic mix of comfortable furnishings including antiques and reproductions. Fourteen rooms are in the three main houses and ten are in refurbished tenant cottages overlooking a pasture filled with horses, donkeys, sheep and even watusi. Arrangements can be made to help with feeding time. We took apples from the room

Life in the hustle and bustle of suburbia doesn't allow much time for fireside reading in window seats, sipping tea on a front porch, riding bikes just for fun, sunsets without billboards, napping in total peace and watching children run across a field to see farm animals. This place transports guests to a place of natural serenity. Other things worth mentioning: complete business meeting facilities, perfect for weddings, quaint family game room with ping-pong table, darts, etc., a beautiful pool and cabana complete with robes and towel service, and a hunter's delight with over 8,000 gaming acres on nearby property.

We had a great time and you will too. The trip was less than a tank and a two hour drive that seemed like nothing. Rates are from $165 to $385 for the grand suite, and all rooms include complimentary breakfast for two. For a truly memorable time with or without the kids, call (888) 615-9722 or visit them online at www.hendersonvillage.com.
