Around Towne
by Susan Kyle

What's New

Hurricane Bay, a new car wash, will soon be built behind Brusters Ice Cream. This will be a drive through touchless car wash as well as a coin operated self-serve unit for those of you who like to wash your own cars.

The Welcome Center in downtown Woodstock is open each day from 10 a.m. — 3 p.m. The Center is located in the Dean Pharmacy Store on Main Street. You can find your favorite magazine The TowneLaker, as well as other important information about the community. Ms. Juanita Hughes, a retired librarian, is responsible for welcoming visitors to Woodstock. She knows Woodstock's history like the back of her hand.

Curves for Women, a 30 minute fitness and weight loss center is opening at 2485A Towne Lake Parkway, next to the shoe repair shop.

What's Happening

On April 2 at 7:30 p.m., there will be a rezoning hearing for the annexation of The Shops at Towne Lake by the City of Woodstock. This plaza is the home to Peking and Tokyo restaurant.

The Fourth Annual Earth Day and Recycle Festival will be held on Saturday, April 20, at Woodstock City Park. Hosted by Keep Cherokee Beautiful, this event is a fun filled day of games and education for the entire family. Several environmental booths will be opened to demonstrate recycling, gardening, smog and pollution to name just a few. There will also be crafts made from recycled products for sale, face painting, door prizes, food and music. The Festival is open from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. and admission is free. So plan to make a day of it and teach your children they can make a difference in this world by recycling.

As we mentioned last month the Board of Education owns 20 acres of land in Wyngate that has been deemed unsuitable for development of a school. The Cherokee County Commissioners have the funds from the state to purchase Cherokee greenspace. Please contact the Commissioners today by email, fax or phone, to tell them that you want them to put this parcel at the top of their list for purchase. (See contact information on page 100.)

Nature Trails. If you are looking for a place for walking, biking, running or just to enjoy nature in some of the most pristine woods in Cherokee County, you will want to get involved. Don't forget about the public meeting to discuss the possibility of creating an extensive nature trail system for Towne Lake. This meeting will be held Tuesday, April 23 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Rose Creek Library. For more information, contact Felicia McAleer at (770) 516-7885 or feliciamcaleer@msn.com.

What's Closed

Barzini's Restaurant located in Buckhead Crossing recently closed their doors.

The back nine at Eagle Watch is temporarily closed. A small glitch in the system has the back nine at the Eagle Watch Golf Course under construction. This is due to the Cherokee County Water Authority condemning the property to add needed sewer capacity for the community's growth. The rest of the course is open and is as wonderful and challenging as always. The club is offering special discounts for members and the public during the construction period, which should only last around 70 more days. See the ad on page 11 for more details on the specials at Eagle Watch Golf Course.

What's Changed

Northside Hospital — Cherokee (Northside) recently decided not to build a new hospital on property owned by Northside located at Sixes Road and I-575. As part of the State of Georgia's requirements, Northside applied for a Certificate of Need (CON) to build this new facility nearly 3½ years ago.

According to Sharon Statham, Director of Marketing and Public Relations, both Kennestone/Wellstar Hospital and North Fulton Medical Center originally opposed the CON and filed legal action against Northside. After careful evaluation of the status and costs associated with the continued battle to obtain full CON approval, Northside decided to renovate their current hospital in Canton and sell this property.

What's Been Seen

Ann Salter walks her two golden retrievers, Rasberry and Woodstock, every day. She has been doing this for over a year now, sometimes going for as far as seven miles. As she walks, she picks up trash — why? Ann says, "Because I just don't like to see it laying there." If there is trash she cannot or will not pick up, like a broken bottle, she will stop someone in the neighborhood and tell them about it. "I wish I knew who to call when I see a small dead animal, I've tried the DOT, Animal Control, Humane Society, no one wants to help" commented Ann.
