As I write this article, I am awaiting the birth of my second grandchild. My daughter has already been having contractions, on and off for the last several days, and we have even made one late night visit to the hospital. So, the baby could come literally at any minute. Through the miracle of modern science and ultrasound, we know that she will be a little girl. She is already much loved and has already been named Sarah Joy.

I remember when my first granddaughter was born three and a half years ago. I was so excited and couldn't wait to meet Grace Elizabeth, just as I can't wait to meet Sarah Joy. Still, when that moment finally arrived and I held her for the first time in my arms, I was completely taken back by the depth of emotion that I felt. It had been 28 years at that point since my daughter's birth and I had forgotten, I guess, how totally and completely you can fall in love with someone, in an instant. When I told one of my colleagues about this overwhelming experience she said, "Now you have someone else that you would die for." Wow! Someone else that I would die for. That was exactly how I felt and still feel about my precious Grace and how I will feel, I am sure, about Sarah. There is nothing else in the world like a parent's (or grandparent's) love for their children.

And that, I believe, is how God feels about his children, us, you and me. Indeed as a Christian I believe that he, in fact, did just that, died for us. We asked Jesus how much he loved us and he stretched out his arms on a cross and said, "This Much!"

As Mothers' Day approaches this month and Fathers' Day in the following month (I'm not sure when Grandparents' Day is or if they even have one anymore) and we recall the overwhelming love of parents for their children, let us also pause and reflect on God's amazing love for his. We should always, always remember and teach our children and grandchildren that they are died for, forgiven, redeemed and much loved children of God, and so are we.

By the way, I have been signing my letters and articles for years with the Biblical greeting "Grace and Peace," but with the birth of my new granddaughter I have decided to change my greeting to "Grace and Joy." It may not be one used in Biblical times, but it sure is consistent with the Biblical message. So...

Grace and Joy!
