City of Woodstock:
Livable Center
Initiative Study
The City of Woodstock is currently involved
in a Livable Center Initiative Study (LCI). The study is designed with
three goals in mind: to increase transportation accessibility and mobility
options and improve traffic flow in and around the downtown area; expand
and improve the downtown area by building on its current successes and
small town atmosphere; and to increase the viability of live, work, and
entertainment choices within the downtown area. LCI held its first Community
Forum in June of this year, in which the Woodstock Downtown Core Committee
was formed. The Committee is comprised of stakeholders, government officials,
and members from the general public.
Stakeholders are local representatives of
community groups and organizations that may have an interest in this study.
Government officials that asked to participate include the City Council
and Mayor, and community-wide meetings have been and will be held to provide
opportunities for the general public to guide the final outcome of the
project.
The final community meeting will be Thursday,
October 10 at the Woodstock Community Church, 8534 Main Street from 7
— 9 p.m. For further information on this study, log on to the City
of Woodstock's website at www.ci.woodstock.ga.us.
First Annual Critter
Cruise
Benefits SPARE
On October 13, bikers from all around Cherokee
County will join together for the First Annual Critter Cruise. This ride
is called the Poker Run and will start at the Fire House Food & Spirits
located at 12195 Highway 92 and Trickum Road in Woodstock. The first bikers
will leave the Fire House restaurant at noon and everyone is expected
to return by 3 p.m. Proceeds will benefit SPARE (Sterilizing Pets And
Reducing Euthanasia). SPARE serves North Georgia communities by providing
free spay and neuter certificates to dog and cat owners who are receiving
financial assistance. They also provide certificates to the general public.
For more information, call (770) 928-5120 or (770) 924-5594.
Animal Hospital
of
Towne Lake Announces
New Staff and Hours
The Animal Hospital of Towne Lake announces
the addition of Dr. Michael Friedlander to their staff. Dr. Friedlander
is a 1998 graduate of Virginia Tech and has practiced in Woodstock for
one year. Dr. Friedlander has special training in ultrasound and a special
interest in feline medicine. Doctors Sherry Weaver and Kristen Parker
are delighted to have Dr. Friedlander on board at the hospital.
Other changes at the hospital are the new
Sunday hours. The hospital will offer full service on Sunday from 11 a.m.
until 3 p.m. in addition to their Monday through Fridays hours of 7:30
a.m. to 7 p.m.
Cast Your Vote
for the Animals
Georgia has a problematic stray animal population,
and thousands of healthy dogs and cats are put down each year because
people have allowed their pets and strays to breed. Unfortunately, not
every pet owner can afford to sterilize his/her pet. This November, a
Constitutional Amendment will be on the ballot establishing a statewide
dog and cat sterilization program to be operated by the Department of
Agriculture, and Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin is reminding us
all to register by October 7 in order to vote on November 5. The program
will be funded, in part, through the sale of a special vehicle license
plate. The license plate should be available for purchase to all Georgia
citizens by January 2003. Purchasing the plate is an easy way to fund
this important statewide spay/neuter program. The plate will be available
at any Department of Motor Vehicles or you can log on to www.dmvs.ga.gov/index.asp.

The Third Annual "Run
for Erin" will be held Sunday, October 13 at Woodstock High School starting
at 8:30 a.m. This run is for Erin Peters, of Eagle Watch, who suffers
from a rare genetic disease called San Filippo Syndrome, also known as
MPS III. The National MPS Society, a non-profit organization for those
individuals and families affected with MPS, will sponsor the event.
Run organizer and Erin's mom, Stacy Peters
said, "The MPS runs have easily become our biggest fundraiser ever. In
2001, more than $175,000 was raised. $150,000 immediately went to grants
for researchers working on MPS, and $12,000 to the creation of the MPS
Family Assistance Plan." Stacy adds, "Towne Lake businesses and residents
have greatly contributed to the overall success of the runs by registering
to run/walk, collecting sponsors and donating items for the post-event
raffle sale."
Erin was diagnosed with MPS III when she
was in the first grade. She is currently in the seventh grade at Woodstock
Middle School. Erin represents thousands of children in need of treatment
and research into these disabling, life threatening disorders.
For more information, to register, offer
a contribution or make a donation of goods and services, please contact
Stacy Peters at (770) 928-0853 or smptrs@bellsouth.net.
