Around Towne
by Cherryl Greenman

As we all are gearing up for the holiday rush, Downtown Woodstock merchants want to make this holiday season less stressful. They will be hosting a "Christmas Open House" on Saturday, December 7 from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. I, for one, am extremely grateful to these merchants, including Betsy's on Main Street, Alida Lois and Christine's Creations for providing convenient, neighborhood shopping. Visiting downtown Woodstock when it's all decorated for Christmas really gets me into the holiday spirit. The Open House will be held in conjunction with the Annual Christmas Jubilee. Let your kids visit Santa after the parade (which starts at 4:30 p.m.), drink hot chocolate or cider, shop and then stay for the annual tree lighting ceremony at dusk. Who knows, you may just start a new family tradition.

There is no place like home, and here in the Towne Lake area, you can find just about everything you could possibly have on your shopping list. Brenda's House of Flowers can certainly help you mark a couple things off your list. Tailored Tots, the Silver Lining, the Decorating Den or perhaps the Wild Honeysuckle are also great places to start your shopping season. One thing I really love about the South is the colorful birds. Don't forget they need special attention now that everything is turning brown for the winter. A quick visit to Wild Birds Unlimited will have your backyard feathered friends singing for joy. Speaking of family traditions, why not visit Portraits by Faith or Carney Studio for an annual holiday picture of your family? This is just the tip of the iceberg of what is available in our community for holiday gift giving.

November is traditionally the kick off of the holiday season. Our Community Calendar and Arts and Entertainment pages are filled with activities sure to appeal to almost everyone. And, if you're looking for the jolly, white-bearded fellow, check out our Santa Sightings. He's in and around the Towne Lake area starting this month — mark your calendars.

The TowneLaker is happy to announce the 2002 Pathfinder of the Year, Wendy Vogt. Wendy was nominated by several individuals who wrote how Wendy spends countless hours finding shelter for lost, abandoned or abused animals. Her dedication to this goal has expanded throughout many years.

November 5 is Election Day, and Georgia voters will get to cast their votes on a computer screen for the first time. No more sliding those paper ballots through a slot! For those who are not computer savvy, test voters have said it's as easy as using a microwave. So be sure to exercise your right to vote!

November is also National Adoption Month. We've featured three families' stories who have been touched by the joys of adoption or foster care.

What's New

TOP Cellular has set up shop in the space formerly occupied by Delmar Treasures, next to the Publix on Towne Lake Parkway at Rose Creek Drive.

Healthkind, a digital mammography screening and bone density testing center, has opened at Town Center Mall inside Macy's department store. Walk-ins and appointments are accepted, and, in many cases, mammography appointments can be scheduled the very next day. The results can be reported to a physician within 24 hours. For additional information or to schedule an appointment, call (678) 564-4005.

We're sad to report the closings of three local businesses. Mattress Buys and Chloe's Closet, both occupying space in the Eagle Pointe shopping center, have closed their doors. Additionally, Centre Court tennis shop will be closing its doors on November 2.

What's Coming

The Cherokee County Commission recently approved the installation of 1,060 feet of sidewalk along Eagle Drive as part of the Towne Lake sidewalk projects.

Cherokee County is in the process of closing on two properties to preserve greenspace. The first is the Wyngate School Site located east of Bells Ferry Road in Towne Lake. With the help of Wyngate resident Felicia McAleer, this property will become a natural habitat and nature trails. The second site is located at the corner of Highway 92 and Springfield Drive and will be used as a "passive" park.

The Crossings Shopping Center soon will be home to Planet Beach Tanning Salon. The salon will occupy space next to the new Publix. This center is located on Towne Lake Parkway behind Bullock's Wine and Spirits. Washington Mutual Bank, which will be in the outparcel of this center between Chili's and Longhorn's, has broken ground recently.

Have a Great
Thanksgiving Holiday!

Towne Lake Diner
Souper Grill

by Kara Kiefer

The Souper Grill, located in the Colonnade at Towne Lake shopping center, is one of Towne Lake's favorite lunch spots. In fact, it won The TowneLaker's Readers' Choice Award for Favorite Lunch Place in 2001 and 2002!

The concept is simple: fresh, homemade food in a comfortable and friendly atmosphere. They offer counter service with plenty of tables to sit at, as well as carry out. Locally owned and operated by Alan and Nancy McLean, Souper Grill has been satisfying appetites for more than two years. Alan makes his own chicken and tuna salad, quiche and of course his famous soups. They also serve a wide variety of sandwiches, cold and grilled, burgers, salads, and they also have a kid's menu available.

The restaurant also supports the community by sponsoring local sports teams including soccer, baseball, and a senior softball league team.

With the holidays approaching, remember the Souper Grill offers corporate boxed lunches for those office meetings, and party platters and catering for business and personal functions. And, speaking of the holidays, Souper Grill offers gift certificates.
