Around Towne
by Cherryl Greenman
As we all are gearing up for the holiday
rush, Downtown Woodstock merchants want to make this holiday season
less stressful. They will be hosting a "Christmas Open House" on Saturday,
December 7 from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. I, for one, am extremely grateful
to these merchants, including Betsy's on Main Street, Alida Lois and Christine's
Creations for providing convenient, neighborhood shopping. Visiting downtown
Woodstock when it's all decorated for Christmas really gets me into the
holiday spirit. The Open House will be held in conjunction with the Annual
Christmas Jubilee. Let your kids visit Santa after the parade (which
starts at 4:30 p.m.), drink hot chocolate or cider, shop and then stay
for the annual tree lighting ceremony at dusk. Who knows, you may just
start a new family tradition.
There is no place like home, and here in
the Towne Lake area, you can find just about everything you could
possibly have on your shopping list. Brenda's House of Flowers can certainly
help you mark a couple things off your list. Tailored Tots, the Silver
Lining, the Decorating Den or perhaps the Wild Honeysuckle are also great
places to start your shopping season. One thing I really love about the
South is the colorful birds. Don't forget they need special attention
now that everything is turning brown for the winter. A quick visit to
Wild Birds Unlimited will have your backyard feathered friends singing
for joy. Speaking of family traditions, why not visit Portraits by Faith
or Carney Studio for an annual holiday picture of your family? This is
just the tip of the iceberg of what is available in our community for
holiday gift giving.
November is traditionally the kick off of
the holiday season. Our Community Calendar and Arts and Entertainment
pages are filled with activities sure to appeal to almost everyone.
And, if you're looking for the jolly, white-bearded fellow, check out
our Santa Sightings. He's in and around the Towne Lake area starting this
month — mark your calendars.
The TowneLaker is happy to announce
the 2002 Pathfinder of the Year, Wendy Vogt. Wendy was nominated
by several individuals who wrote how Wendy spends countless hours finding
shelter for lost, abandoned or abused animals. Her dedication to this
goal has expanded throughout many years.
November 5 is Election Day, and Georgia
voters will get to cast their votes on a computer screen for the first
time. No more sliding those paper ballots through a slot! For those who
are not computer savvy, test voters have said it's as easy as using a
microwave. So be sure to exercise your right to vote!
November is also National Adoption Month.
We've featured three families' stories who have been touched by the joys
of adoption or foster care.
