Around Towne
by Cherryl Greenman

January is always a time of new beginnings. There are resolutions to make (and hopefully not break), Christmas trees to recycle, new businesses (hopefully) to explore and birthdays to celebrate including Towne Lake's 15th birthday. Yes, it was fall of 1988 when the first residents moved into "The Arbors."

We, at The TowneLaker, are changing too! We're adding new features, enhancing others, and of course inviting you, our readers, to join in some monthly fun.

As a way to commemorate Towne Lake's 15th birthday this year, The TowneLaker magazine has planned monthly contests for our readers. The first will be a Towne Lake Trivia question. The question will appear each month in Around Towne. The first person to respond by e-mail or voice mail with the correct answer will win a gift certificate from a Towne Lake area merchant.

This month's trivia question is: What was the name of this area before it became Towne Lake? If you know the answer, e-mail to editor@townelaker.com or call (770) 517-8210 ext. 560.

We are very happy to have Chip Rogers, State Representative for District 15, writing a column each month (see page 16). He is eager to serve his community, so write, e-mail or call him.

This month, you will see several opportunities for you to become involved in your community. First, we are taking nominations for the Tournament of Roses contest (see page 14). We also have listed Teachers of the Year from our Towne Lake area schools. Be sure to vote for your favorite TowneLaker Teacher of the Year! (See pages 56 and 86.) And speaking of voting, it's time for the Annual Readers' Choice Awards. The ballot and guidelines are on pages 50 and 51.

WHAT'S NEW?

Sadly, Chloe's Closet located in the Eagle Pointe shopping center has closed its doors for business. Towne Lake now has several retail spaces available and it would be great to see some new types of businesses come to our area. But supporting the existing businesses will be the best way to send a message to new entrepreneurs that the Towne Lake area is a great place to set up a business.

The property located at Rose Creek Drive and Eagle Drive has been seeing some activity lately. According to the County Engineers, there are two things happening: Cherokee County Roads and Bridges is taking dirt out to utilize it in a few of its road projects, and the Cherokee County Water Authority is fixing water and sewer lines in The Arbors, whose lines run through this property. There are no plans, at this time, for any new development of this land.

Elaine Face, formerly with Salon Allure & Spa, has opened her own shop on Barrett Parkway in Town Center. Elaine's new shop, Innovations by Elaine, is a full service salon, specializing in hair color and cuts. Call Elaine for your next "do" at (770) 420-7411. We wish Elaine the best of luck in her new venture.

Cherokee Christian School has announced a name change for the school. The new elementary and middle schools will now be called "Cherokee Christian Academy" and the high school is now the "Cherokee Christian High School." These changes were made due to the start of the high school and the continued growth of the entire campus.

Team Payam is offering a free body-composition analysis and blood pressure monitoring during the month of January. If you haven't had yours checked for a while and are curious, this would be a great time to have it done. Please call (678) 238-2639 for more details.

The needles are prickly; the bark is peeling off; it's a fire hazard in your living room. What is it? It's your Christmas tree, and it's time to say good-bye! Christmas tree recycling will be at the following sites: Home Depot on Hwy. 92 and Riverstone, Hobgood Park, Kenny Askew Park, and Ball Ground Park. The parks will accept trees on Saturday, January 4 from 9 a.m. — 4 p.m. Check with Home Depot for their drop off days and times.

The TowneLaker wishes you a Happy and Prosperous New Year!

Towne Lake Diner
The Hearth

by Kara Kiefer

One of the great things about living in Towne Lake is the convenience of establishments for work, pleasure and recreation. The Hearth, a restaurant located at the Eagle Watch golf course, combines all three. Whether it's for a bite after a golf or tennis match, to attend a club or professional group meeting or to enjoy a Sunday brunch, the Hearth can accommodate any one of these needs. I first visited The Hearth eight years ago while house hunting in Towne Lake. I still enjoy the warm and laid-back atmosphere.

The Hearth is open for lunch and Sunday Brunch. The lunch menu is simple, filled with favorites such as salads, soups, grilled and made-to-order sandwiches. Brunch items include traditional favorites such as omelets and French toast.

The Hearth can accommodate a variety of group sizes. In fact, many clubs such as AARP and the Towne Lake Business Association use the Hearth as a monthly or special meeting place. The restaurant can also accommodate wedding receptions for up to 120 people. According to one of the managers, Pat, the Hearth has one of the lowest minimums around for catering whether it's for a professional or personal function.
