The McDonald's slogan, "We love to see you smile," has taken on its own meaning to the AIM students at Carmel Elementary. The students, in an ongoing community service project for the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House, made "goody bags" for the families staying at the House. The students brought in items for the bags, including toys, stickers, snacks, stuffed animals, toiletry items and paint sets. Additionally, the AIM students have organized a school-wide campaign to collect pop-top rings from canned drinks to be donated to the House and in turn recycled for money.

Ronald McDonald Houses are located throughout the United States and provide a "home away from home" for families of critically ill children.

Mrs. O'Mara's third grade class recently hosted a pet parade as their Civic Safari project. All proceeds from the parade were given to the Cherokee County Humane Society.

Bascomb Elementary has created a new program to promote character education in the classroom. The program, spearheaded by the PTA, is called Civic Safari which is curriculum-based community service giving students the opportunity to apply what they are learning in school to real life situations while building civic awareness.

Each grade, Kindergarten — Fourth, is given a name with a theme, and results are posted at the end of each semester. Each grade has several success stories. The projects are creative and unique and include activities such as building bird habitats, holding a mini-walk to raise money for Juvenile Diabetes Research and holding a pet parade to raise money for the Cherokee County Humane Society.

Principal Ruth Summerlin had this to say about the Civic Safari, "I am so impressed with the hard work of our teachers, parents and students in their efforts. These service-learning projects make me so proud."
