Leadership Cherokee helps to strengthen new and existing community leaders through educational experiences. Shown above are some of the 2003 class of Leadership Cherokee.

Leadership Cherokee and Teen Leadership Cherokee are two programs sponsored by the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce. The two groups of participants were selected at the end of 2002 and recently attended their respective orientations.

The purpose of Leadership Cherokee is to develop and strengthen new and existing community leaders through educational experiences. This is accomplished by exposing them to various aspects of the community. Participants are nominated by a firm, organization or an individual. The nominees are then required to complete a detailed application. All nominees must live and/or work in Cherokee County.

Teen Leadership's goal is to develop knowledge and leadership skills in young people. The selected students must be in the 10th grade and live and/or go to school in Cherokee County. Each class displays educational diversity with representation from the public high schools as well as private or home-schooled students. Participants are selected based primarily on the information provided in his/her application as well as information provided by a personal reference. The class is limited to 20 participants.

Bascomb Elementary School was recently surprised by a visit from Cherokee County School Superintendent, Dr. Frank Petruzielo. He came to the school to announce that Cindy Crews had been voted Cherokee County Teacher of the Year by a selection committee of volunteer members from the community, not directly affiliated nor employed with the School District.

"I can't believe this, there must be someone more deserving of this honor," was Cindy's first comment when she heard the news from Dr. Petruzielo. He then presented her with a bouquet of roses and explained that Cindy was voted Cherokee County Teacher of the Year because of her commitment to her students and how she encourages and embraces new technology. Cindy helped develop a proposal to increase the number of computers in her classroom. The school district awarded her a wireless computer lab, which she shares with a first grade class. These two classes are working on an animal book which they plan to have published. The first graders are doing illustrations for the book and Cindy's class is creating the editorial content.

Cindy has been a teacher for 15 years, teaching at Bascomb since 1995. She has also taught at Boston Elementary and in Bibb County. Cindy says, "I am very fortunate to work in a school district that embraces technology and sees its future to students."

The TowneLaker congratulates Cindy Crews for being named Cherokee County Teacher of the Year.
