Around Towne

by Cherryl Greenman

  What's New

There have been reports of coyotes attacking small dogs and cats in the Towne Lake area. They were seen in the Corps of Engineer property that borders Towne Lake, and specifically there were incidents in Eagle Watch. Please beware.

Bruster's Ice Cream is making it easier to get their fabulous ice cream without even getting out of your car. Their new drive-up window is now in full swing. They are open from 10 a.m. - 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. - 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

What's Changed

Eve's Closet has changed hands. The new name is Horse Feathers and the new owner, Kay Brock, says she is excited about this new designer outlet venture. Kay has been in retail for several years. She owned a Merle Norman shop in California before moving to Georgia. Kay lives in the Cottages, just a few blocks from "the office." "Our designer outlet carries unique and unusual clothing and jewelry," says Kay.

China Inn located in the Southpointe at Towne Lake shopping center has changed owners and its name to China City. Also located in this center was Kids Hour, and we are sorry to report that they closed their doors earlier this year.

Towne Lake Carpets has a new owner, Mike Watts. "I am happy to be part of this growing community. I remember riding dirt bikes in this area before there were homes," Mike says. Towne Lake Carpets still has the same friendly faces because Mike insisted on keeping the manager and sales representative as part of the purchase agreement.

TowneLaker Contest Winners

We are happy to report the winners of our first trivia contest. The questions was: What was the name of this area before it became Towne Lake? The answer was Thousand Acre Woods. We actually had two winners - while Carol Winston was calling in her answer, Carrie Brown was e-mailing hers! Congratulations to both ladies. Carol received a gift certificate from Song's Garden in the Publix shopping center, and Carrie received a gift certificate from Kani House Japanese Steakhouse on Towne Lake Parkway.

Our trivia question for February is - In what neighborhood was the first home occupied in the fall of 1988? If you know the answer, e-mail to editor@townelaker.com or call (770) 517-8210 ext. 560 and leave your answer. The winner will receive a gift certificate from a Towne Lake area merchant.

Our Hidden Logo Contest winner for January was Margie Lockhart. She correctly identified the CENTURY 21 Advantage logo which appeared on page 36 in the box advertising Advantage Mortgage. Margie received a gift certificate from Restora Plastic Surgery Centre on North Medical Parkway. Congratulations to Margie Lockhart.

Salon Allure & Spa also offers gift certificates, which will guarantee your Valentine will be pampered. Call Betsy's on Main Street for a unique gift basket that will be delivered to your Valentine. Or you can call Meg Murray at the Decorating Den - she has several Valentine specials. Perhaps your Valentine is into antiques and collectibles. The Elegant Flea may be able to help you select something only your true love would appreciate.

As we all know, flowers are always a favorite on Valentine's Day. If this is your plan of action, call Brenda's House of Flowers, Country Keepsakes Florist or Flowers by Joanne. They are all ready and waiting with several special Valentine's Day bouquets or the number one item - "long stem roses."

In addition, Brenda's House of Flowers is offering a Valentine Special that includes helping the Cherokee County Humane Society. So if you want to help pets while you "Say it with Flowers," call 1 (866) 364-PETS (7387). (See story on page 46.)

We are all probably guilty of looking at Valentine's Day as a day for younger folks. Well, don't forget our seniors. Take time out and visit The Gardens and wish them all a Happy Valentine's Day. Speaking of The Gardens, the Towne Lake Community Church holds services each Sunday morning at 11 a.m. for the residents. Feel free to stop by and say hello.

Towne Lake Diner
Featherstone's Grille at Towne Lake Hills
by Kara Kiefer

I admit it. I love to eat out. I love the break from cooking, and my husband loves the break from doing the dishes. And my kids, well, they love French fries. I especially enjoy places that serve the French fries my children love but also real "adult" food in a nice atmosphere. Featherstone's Grille at Towne Lake Hills meets all the above requirements. It's a unique find in Towne Lake in that it has child-friendly menu options as well as upscale choices for the adults. The interior, with an enclosed sunroom, offers the opportunity for couples and groups of adults to dine without necessarily sitting next to excited, crayon-wielding children.

Featherstone's offers a unique, customer-driven venue for events as well. Many local groups meet there on a monthly basis. The restaurant also handles corporate parties, rehearsal dinners and wedding reception by offering private, separate rooms for meetings and events. "The customers are made to feel special," according to manager, Rob Van Leer. "What sets Featherstone's apart from other restaurants is that we are chef-driven. We have innovative menus and an extensive selection of beer and wine. We are non-corporate which means we can be flexible with guest requests," continued Rob.

Every Wednesday, Featherstone's offers theme dinners. They also sponsor several events throughout the year. In February, for example, they will host a Valentine's Dinner on February 14 and a Crawfish Boil on February 22. Chef Keith Davis keeps the menus fresh and innovative, and of course, there's always French fries.

Whether it's for a cozy dinner for two or a night out with the kids, why not give Featherstone's a try.
