Bascomb Elementary
students were recently introduced to the many different functions that
work together to create a community. Through the efforts of Gina Bennett
and her myriad of volunteers, Civic Safari, a curriculum-based character
education program, was developed to help the students understand how community
service projects can benefit their community. Woodstock Day was developed
for this purpose through the Civic Safari curriculum goals.
Woodstock Mayor Bill Dewrell and Gina Carr,
Co-founder of The TowneLaker and Team Leader of CENTURY 21 Advantage were
the MC's for Woodstock Day. More than 20 community organizations had exhibits
in the gymnasium and presented the students information about their respective
organizations. Some of the participating organizations were the Woodstock
Fire Department, the Woodstock Post Office, Cobb Energy, the Towne Lake
Business Association, the Cherokee County Humane Society, the Cherokee
Arts Council and the Woodstock Kiwanis Club.
The second graders performed a skit recounting
the history of Woodstock, and Wildlife Action, Inc. presented a live show
about Woodstock's wildlife and natural resources. The children also received
information packets from the participating organizations to take home.
