Three Children's
Dream Becomes a Reality -
A New Park
Pictured above: Participants in the Groundbreaking
for the new childrnen's park.
One and half years ago, Tori Westrick, her
brother Zach Cargle and sister Katie Westrick wrote a letter to Woodstock
Mayor Bill Dewrell stating that they did not have a park in their neighborhood
and that there was a big lot that could be used for this purpose. Mayor
Dewrell took this letter very seriously, as he does all communication
he receives from the community. The City contacted the owner of the land
located on Springfield Road off Highway 92, to discuss the situation with
him. After sharing the letter with the owner, Mayor Dewrell received an
agreement from the owner to have the city purchase the property for a
park. The next major hurdle for the City to overcome was the financing.
Through a grant from the Greenspace Program established by former Governor
Roy Barnes, the City received $75,000 to purchase the property. On June
4, Mayor Dewrell, Roy Barnes and other guests, broke ground for the new
park, which will be called Springfield Road Park. Roy Barnes presented
each of the children with a watch and certificate commending them for
their dedication. Woodstock Director of Planning and Zoning Harmit Bedi
thanked Mike Dickman, owner of the land and others who made this park
a reality for the children and the community. Bedi also noted that eventually
a path for walking and bike riding will connect this new park to the Little
River Park.
