Cushing Park
A break from the main stream stress to a
quiet relaxing adventure!

by Susan Kyle

Well, we did it again! My husband William, our 2½ year-old Molly and 8 month-old Samantha all went on another overnight getaway. You may remember our last getaway to Henderson Village. The cool thing about this "trip" is that it's less than 10 minutes from Towne Lake and it's the best kept secret we know of... not for long.

Yes loyal readers, have I got a tip for you! Fifty years ago, Delta employees developed a recreation facility at Lake Allatoona. It's called Cushing Park - a beautiful, hilly and wooded 60-acre property with boating, docks, docks, fishing, eight cabins, camping, a swimming pool, picnic pavilions and water skiing in a beautiful cove of the lake located directly behind BridgeMill. You have to go through BridgeMill to get there, yet not many BridgeMillians know of its existence.

Membership is now open to the general public, not just Delta employees. I love a good find. I felt very nostalgic the entire time we were there. All the stresses of daily life just sort of fell away when we entered the gate, and we truly relaxed our way through the weekend.

Here we were at a hidden away place that is like going back in time, located behind a development known for the most elaborate swimming pool in the state. The rush of day-to-day life could make us forget to even look for a place like this. This is the kind of get-away we were hoping for. It was our anniversary, and we thought the location was perfect for our family.

Our rustic/retro air conditioned cabin overlooked the lake and was very quaint. The cabin sleeps six, so the four of us had room to roam. Each cabin has a charcoal grill just outside the door, so we mainly grilled out. We stopped for groceries on the way in and never left the property. My favorite photo op was Molly and her Dad on the fishing dock. She was so excited just seeing fish in the water. We took nature walks, played on the playground, bounced the basketball, got ice cream at the snack bar, swam and even picnicked together. Molly ran around in an atmosphere that was so down-to-earth it made me feel good to expose her to how things use to be

when I was a young girl in Upstate New York.

Our imaginations were in overload. At night, we pretended we were kids at camp again by taking flashlights out for an adventure. We met families from all over the Southeast that have been coming to Cushing Park for generations. Each had fond stories of summers gone by. It's a place to make memories; that's for sure. We met Sandra and Billy Palmer who live on-site. Sandra's father worked for Delta and she spent her girlhood summers at Cushing Park. Now life is one big break for her; she has come full circle and is the President of the Park.

As we pulled away, I worked to brace myself to get back to reality. Cushing Park is not for everyone, but for those who appreciate a rustic lifestyle, it's a dream come true. We hope to go back soon and are already planning our next visit. Hope to see you there too.

Membership fees include a one time $200 initiation fee and are only $425 per year. The rental fee on the cabin we rented was $30 a night for members. Membership fees will be pro-rated for anyone joining this year.
