And the Parade Marched On

It's celebration time in Towne Lake! As you read through this issue, you will see how excited we are about the upcoming Cherokee Jubilee at Towne Lake. See pages 48 - 49, 78 and the back cover for details about the parade and the Taste of Towne Lake.

"It will be a wonderful opportunity for Towne Lake area residents to come together to celebrate this wonderful little pocket of world we call home," said Event Sponsor Gina Carr of CENTURY 21 Advantage.

Join the fun at the Jubilee on Labor Day, Monday, September 1. Beginning at 4:30 p.m., a parade will start at CENTURY 21 Advantage (across from Wendy's) and march down Towne Lake Parkway, turning East at Towne Lake Amoco towards Mount TLC (Towne Lake Community Church). The Taste of Towne Lake will be held at Mount TLC following the parade. The Jubilee proceeds will benefit the March of Dimes, Cherokee County Humane Society and Everyday Angels. Several local restaurants will have booths for you to "taste" until you drop (or pop)! There will be special entertainment and tethered hot air balloon rides. Hope to see your there!

What's New

The Cherokee County Commissioners recently approved a sidewalk on Putnam Ford Road on the east side between Eagle Drive (where it will tie into the sidewalk that will be constructed as part of the Eagle Drive Widening Project) and Bascomb Carmel Road. At Bascomb Carmel Road, the project will continue along the south side of Bascomb Carmel Road and tie into the existing sidewalk at Carmel Elementary School. Construction is projected to begin in the Fall of 2004. The Commission also approved a design services contract for the design of improvements on Towne Lake Parkway and I-575. The proposed design is for an additional passing lane eastbound, under the Interstate bridge. The intent is to ease the flow of traffic on eastbound Towne Lake Parkway traffic.

Fire Station 1/Oak Grove on Bells Ferry Road is getting some needed improvements. The improvements include expanding the living areas and making general repairs. According to Robbie Westbrook of the Cherokee County Emergency Management Agency, the station runs a fire truck and an ambulance out of this station and was in need of repair.

Wolf Camera opened its doors for business recently. The store is located in the Kroger Shopping Center in the space formerly occupied by Joe Muggs.

Drivers be aware. The new stoplight at Eagle Drive and Parkbrooke Drive is now operational. The light was established primarily to assist the Cherokee County bus drivers to get in and out of the bus garage, which is located behind Bruster's and Hurricane Bay Car Wash.

Sylvan Learning Center is scheduled to move from their current location on North Medical Parkway to the South Pointe center (in the space formerly occupied by Kid's Hour) by the end of August. Director Tiffany Roberts said, "We are excited about moving to the new location. We really needed the additional space our new location will have for all our students."

Comic Books Etc., located next to Batter's Up in the South Pointe center, will open their showroom in mid-August. They will carry vintage and new comic books as

well as action toys, posters, videos, busts, novels and apparel. Owner Rick Verbanas said, "We have had a mail order website for two years. We have shipped thousands of items ordered from our website all around the country and decided to make Woodstock our headquarters for our new showroom." A Grand Opening is scheduled for September 13, featuring artists who will be available for free autographs.

On Going

Editor's Note: As we review new businesses coming to the Towne Lake area we occasionally receive information or "rumors" of what may or may not be happening. We wanted to let you know that the Publix at Rose Creek is alive and well and certainly here to STAY, according to Store Manager Lonnie Peplau. The new Publix at the Crossing Shopping Center will be opening this month. Additional new businesses scheduled to open soon at the Crossing Shopping Center include Washington Mutual, Planet Tan and Southeastern Dry Cleaning.

Construction is continuing for the Express Oil Change across the street from the Amoco/BP and Eckerds at the corner of Parkbrooke Circle and Parkside Drive. Dr. Weaver's Animal Hospital of Towne Lake is also busy with construction of her new hospital on Parkbrooke Circle.

Towne Lake Diner
The Winchester Woodfire Grill

by Susan Kyle

Recently my husband William and I spent an evening at The Winchester Woodfire Grill in Canton. Western oil paintings, colorful one-of-a-kind weaving, American Indian pottery, hand-made saddles and a rare collection of Winchester Rifles adorn this casual upscale restaurant. Authentic as the pieces themselves, larger-than-life owner and visionary R.L. Glosson carefully selected cowboy memorabilia from Atlanta to Albuquerque. Glosson enlisted the creative eye of Cherokee interior designer Seleta Hayes and the result is a restaurant with a very unique atmosphere. A true maverick, Glosson plans to offer a selection of beautiful oil paintings in a catalogued gallery in the future.

Well-known Chef Andrew Featherstone and restaurateur Doug Foley conceptualized the innovative cuisine and operations. Executive Chef Brian Jones was on hand the night we dined. The menu features an array of fine beef cuts, slow cooked over a hickory wood fire grill. We began our meal with a large, fresh and tasty shrimp cocktail and pan seared scallops served on a bed of sundried tomato salsa. I chose the sirloin steak (tender and delicious) that was served with a 16-ounce loaded baked potato. William had the combo platter, which consisted of a petite filet, breast of chicken and a buffalo sausage, all "cooked to perfection" in his own words. The top quality ingredients were evident. Fresh seafood, meats, and pasta are offered as well, all with a unique southwestern flair. There is an excellent wine list and a full selection of bourbons and scotches fit for real cowboys.

Our server was attentive, and never was the bread basket - filled with warm biscuits and authentic blue cornmeal sticks - left empty. We were asked several times if everything was to our liking. Between bites of some very delightful food, we managed to say, "Yes!" The Winchester Woodfire Grill, open for just a short time now, promises one of the finest culinary experiences north of Buckhead.
