Where There's a Desire to Help -
There's Hope for a Cure

Towne Lake residents have big hearts and they want to help find cures for many diseases - some crippling or even life threatening. They run... walk... ride bikes... participate in festivals. October is Women's Health Awareness Month. It is also the time during which community members take to the streets and highways in hopes of raising funds to find cures for several crippling diseases, some with first hand knowledge of the diseases including breast cancer, heart diseases, MPS III, JDRF and more. The TowneLaker gives a big "High Five" to all who get out and help raise money for these organizations.

Family Network Supports
W
alk to Cure Diabetes 2003

On October 25, many local area families will participate in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Walk to Cure Diabetes at the Concourse Office Park in Dunwoody. The purpose of the Walk is to raise money to fund research for a cure, and to raise community awareness about this devastating disease. Unbelievably, more than 46 children in the Woodstock area are known to suffer from this chronic auto-immune system disease known as Type I (Juvenile) diabetes.

This disease, commonly referred to as diabetes, actually occurs in two different forms, and they are two very different diseases. Type II diabetes, which occurs most often in adults, accounts for 90% of the 17 million cases nationwide. The remaining 10% of diabetes cases are known as Type I (Juvenile). Type I diabetes is an auto-immune disorder in which, for some unknown reason, the body attacks and destroys its own insulin-producing islet cells in the pancreas. It usually strikes in childhood, but lasts a lifetime and cannot be outgrown. People with Type I diabetes must receive multiple daily insulin injections just to survive.

Michelle Parker is the mother of an 8 year-old son, Will, who was diagnosed with Type I diabetes at the age of 4. She is also the 2003 Walk to Cure Diabetes Family Team Chairperson and leads the Woodstock Family Network group. "The goal of the Family Network is to provide education, support and hope to children and their families who face this daily battle. Our Woodstock Family group has grown from 21 families last year to 46 today. The numbers are staggering. "While our mission at JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research, the needs of people with diabetes have always been our guiding force. We are committed to responding to the needs, questions, and issues of families who are struggling with this disease every day," said Michelle.

"It's about more than hope. It's about action. Because of our family's efforts and community support, research facilities like the one at Emory University are able to conduct experimental research that may one day lead to a cure for this devastating disease. As parents of these kids we want to be part of the solution - we have to be! In some small way, we are making a difference," Michelle further stated.

October is Breast Cancer
Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and to help promote this awareness, there will be the Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer and a fashion show at Lenox Square.

The Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer will be held on October 25 and 26. The Walk is a 25 - 35 mile fundraiser walk through Atlanta. All proceeds go towards Atlanta based cancer support, research, financial aid and awareness/education programs.

The Breast Support Group of Towne Lake will participate in this walk. Many of these ladies walked last year in the 2002 3-Day Walk. This support group has also raised more than $30,000 for breast cancer through golf tournaments, pledges, bracelets and pins.

Each member of the group has been touched in one way or another by this disease, and they move in many directions to assist others within the Towne Lake area who are diagnosed with this disease. Sue Gagain is a driving force behind many of the group's fundraisers, personal support for individuals and group support activities. (See October Pathfinder.)
