Around Towne
by Cherryl Greenman
You may have heard the rumors, seen the surveyors
and wondered all summer, but it's now official. The property at the northwest
corner of Bells Ferry Road and Eagle Drive is slated to be a Wal-Mart
according to the Cherokee County Engineering Office. Schedule for construction
and opening was not available as of this writing.
Towne Lake Fitness will be making
some exciting changes in the coming months. They will open their new club,
The Club at Towne Lake, in the Shops at Towne Lake on Parkbrooke
Drive (next to Peking & Tokyo). "Our second club will be geared to
adults. We will expand our group exercise classes, and it will also feature
a women's sauna, childcare, an Apex Nutrition Center and a City Blends
Café," said owner Wayne Kosbe. Towne Lake Fitness Club (in
South Pointe at Towne Lake) will become a premiere strength and sport-conditioning
complex. "We are offering discounted pre-sale memberships before our Grand
Opening," Wayne further said. For more information, please call (770)
592-9933.
Parents and teens alike will jump for joy!
April and Wayne Kosbe stated, "We will utilize part of the existing facility
(Towne Lake Fitness Club) to build a teen center, called Players.
It will have an arcade housing X-Box, Play Stations, pool tables, air
hockey and foosball tables. We will also have a dance floor with bands
on the weekends and some weekdays," Wayne said. Players will also offer
pizza and drinks. "We are planning a big New Year's party for the teens.
We have received several positive comments from the community about this
endeavor," Wayne continued.
State Representative Chip Rogers, the Cherokee
County Board of Commissioners and Georgia Department of Transportation
have announced the construction of auxiliary lanes on I-575 between Highway
92 and Towne Lake Parkway. The new lanes will help alleviate
traffic on I-575. Rogers said, "We had discussed this idea with D.O.T.
Commissioner Tom Coleman back in April. At that time it did not look like
it would happen this soon. We are thrilled that it is happening this quickly.
The Department of Transportation has been very helpful."
Several new traffic signals are scheduled
for installation soon, one at the intersection of Bells Ferry Road
and Wyngate Parkway and another at Bascomb Carmel Road and
Putnam Ford Road. Emergency vehicle traffic signals also are planned
on Bells Ferry Road at Fire Station 1 and Fire Station 20.
If you're hungry for chicken or pizza, the
Optimist Club of Towne Lake is sponsoring FUNdraiser Nights at
the KFC/Pizza Hut on Towne Lake Parkway. If you mention the FUNdraiser
Night when placing your order on Friday, November 7 and Tuesday, November
11, KFC/Pizza Hut will donate 10% of your purchases towards the benefit
of Cherokee County children.
Enterprise Rent-a-Car will open soon
in Towne Lake Commons in the former space of Your Turn Consignment, who
recently moved to a larger space within the same center.
Big League Barber, a nationally franchised
sports-theme barber shop, is coming to the Colonnade at Towne Lake in
the space formerly occupied by the Purple Pond. They will feature a big
screen TV in the reception area and TVs at every station. The shop
is scheduled to open before Thanksgiving.
Glass Etc. will soon open its doors
in the Towne Lake Center, anchored by the new Publix at Towne Lake
Parkway. Steve Campbell (formerly an assistant manager under Walt
Leonard) has returned to Publix at Rose Creek as its new manager.
Previous manager Lonnie Peplau has been transferred to the Sandy Springs
Publix on Roswell Road.

Towne Lake
Diner
Woodstock Family
Restaurant
by Kara Kiefer
The Woodstock Family Restaurant has a motto:
"Real home cooking at a real fair price." I don't know about you,
but home-cooking in my household has taken a back seat to hockey, tennis,
meetings and occasional laziness. If someone is willing to cook me a home
cooked meal, I'm more than willing to accept. This is what I like about
the Woodstock Family Restaurant - good, home-style food at a reasonable
price.
The restaurant has been in existence since
2002 and was taken over by new owners, Jeff Wilbur and Larry and Diane
Remy in February 2003. The menus (breakfast, lunch and dinner) are designed
to satisfy a wide range of appetites and tastes. You can start your day
with an omelette, belgian waffle, eggs benedict or a bowl of grits. Lunch
time offers an all-you-can-eat buffet or traditional lunch items from
the menu, such as gourmet hamburgers, salads, soup and sandwiches. Jeff
swears by the fried chicken for dinner as well as Southern and European
choices, seafood and a Senior's menu. During my visit, the food was indeed
good, but it would have been better if it was served a little quicker.
Something to consider if in a hurry.
Community involvement is important to Jeff,
Larry and Diane. They currently sponsor a Player of the Game at Woodstock
and Sequoyah High Schools. Through this sponsorship, Woodstock Family
Restaurant donates $25 per home game to each school's booster club. They
also support the Cherokee County Humane Society by donating 5% of their
gross sales every Thursday to the organization. "We all strongly believe
in supporting the community," states Jeff, a 23 year resident of Woodstock.
They are also the meeting place for several civic and professional associations.
The restaurant recently added a new facility to their eatery - Olde Towne
Tavern, which adjacently joins the restaurant. The Tavern is a great addition
as it offers six televisions, video games, darts, a full bar and a different,
more casual menu than its parent restaurant. But, if you've just got to
have the famous fried chicken, both menus are available at both establishments.
