is "Friends of Youth." Focusing on this motto, they recently joined with
the Woodstock Women's Society to help raise toys and monies for the U.S.
Marine's "Toys for Tots" Drive. The drive was a black tie affair held
at Featherstone's Grille in Towne Lake.
Continuing with their motto, the Optimist
Club held their Annual Youth Appreciation Breakfast at Featherstone's
Grille in Towne Lake. The following local youth were recognized: Etowah
High School, Joe Davis, Most Improved. Woodstock High School, Amanda Barron,

State Representative Chip Rogers and Mitch Lawson, Executive Director
of the Coosa River Basin Initiative
State Representative Chip Rogers was recently
recognized for his efforts to protect Georgia's water reserves. The Georgia
Water Coalition honored Rogers. Rogers led the fight to defeat proposed
legislation which would have given ownership of most of Georgia's water
resources to a small, select group of large industrial and agricultural
interests. The state's water will continue to be a public resource. In
response to the recognition, Representative Rogers had this to say, "I
am grateful to have received this recognition. My district represents
a large portion of Lake Allatoona, and the citizens can trust that I will
continue to work to protect this vital part of our community and our state."

Habitat for Humanity
home site being built by Loren Construction and other Cherokee County
vendors, suppliers and sub-contractors
Loren Construction of Woodstock is building
a home on a lot owned by Habitat for Humanity. The house is located in
Spicer's Grove and once it is built, it will sell for a price in the low
$190's with all profits going directly to Habitat for Humanity. The home
will have 3 bedrooms, 2 baths and special features which include Corion
countertops and hardiplank siding. Mark Carruth, President of Loren Construction
and Board member of Habitat for Humanity, arranged the project. Mark said,
"All of our vendors, suppliers and sub-contractors are donating time and/or
materials. There has been an amazingly generous response from everyone
we contacted. We build in the Cherokee area, so we went to everyone we
do business with and told them about the project." The homeowners of Spicer's
Grove have been very supportive and many have offered to help with the
project in any way they can. The home is scheduled to be completed by
the end of February or early March.

Northside Hospital - Cherokee recently received
a check for $5,000 from the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation and the
Cherokee County Fire-Emergency Services in recognition for the support
they provided and the important role the hospital plays in the community
as well as the critical role of treating burn victims. The hospital is
not considered a "designated burn center" and the donation is an effort
to augment the capabilities of the treatment of burns at the hospital.
The Foundation receives support mainly from the firefighters' "boot drives."
