Local Artist Holds
Second
Art Show Fundraiser
Local artist Ann Litrel has created a body
of paintings that depict beauties well known to Cherokee County residents.
Her collection of work will appear for the first time in "American Visions:
Landscapes of Cherokee County," an art fundraiser which will take place
on January 23 from 5:30 - 10 p.m. at Our Special Place in downtown Woodstock.
Also featured will be select furnishings from Christine's Creations, owned
by local designer Christine Blight, and the framing artistry of The Picture
Framer's Kathy Pecue. The cost of the event is $10, which will include
a buffet and wine bar hosted by Our Special Place, and can be used toward
the purchase of the art. Cherokee Commission Chairman Mike Byrd and his
wife Charlice will be lending their support to the event, and all proceeds
from the art sales will benefit the "Nest of Cherokee" and charities for
the children of Cherokee County. For more information, please call Ann
Litrel at (770) 517-3060.
Residents Voice
their Opinions
The response of Cherokee County residents
in regards to the modified school calendar has been in favor of the calendar.
According to School Board Member Patty Baker, the summary of these responses
are as follows: Parent response - 58%; Teacher/staff response - 82%; Student
response - 71%; and Community response - 69% in favor of the modified
calendar.
Patty went on to say, "The School Board will
base its decision on what we feel is best for the students. A final vote
will take place at the January 15 meeting. It is very important to note
that the modified calendar is not a year round calendar. We have not even
considered a year round calendar. Both the traditional and the modified
calendars have 180 total school days." If you would like to respond to
the calendar, you may e-mail any School Board member. The information
is available at www.cherokee.k12.ga.us. (See Elected Officials page
for School Board e-mails and telephone numbers.)

Andrew, Owen
and Tiffany Gehl.
Beginning in March, there will be a new addition
to the Around Town Community Magazine family. Around Canton magazine
will debut with a distribution of more than 10,000, focusing on the Canton,
Waleska and Macedonia areas. "Our goal is to reinforce the sense of community
that connects this gorgeous area," says Owner and Publisher Andrew Gehl.
"With Canton's explosive growth in both the residential and commercial
areas, we wanted to help keep intact the small town feel Canton is known
for and continues to develop." Andrew and his wife Tiffany are the founders
of this new franchise magazine and reside in Canton with their son Owen
and newborn baby girl Lydia Caitlin, who was born on Saturday, December
27. Lydia weighed 7 lbs., 7 oz. and was 21 inches long at birth.
The Gehl's are receiving the same enthusiasm
and reception from the public that helped Around Canton's sister
publications, The TowneLaker and Sixes Living Magazine, become
the preferred choice for community related information. "Everyone we mention
the magazine to is excited and helpful," says Andrew. Around Canton
will be modeled after the sister magazines, keeping the monthly themes
- such as Mother, Father, Teacher and Grandparents of the Year - that
helped the community embrace these magazines. Around Canton will
have timely articles and pictures on local events, commercial and residential
development, school happenings, columns from Canton Mayor Cecil Pruett
and State Representative Calvin Hill, and arts and entertainment information.
"We fell in love with the region a few years ago," Tiffany says. "After
we decided to move here, we wanted to get more involved with the community
and what better way to do that than to start a community magazine focusing
on all that is good about the area."
Around Canton's staff encourages you
to provide them input and information to help them achieve their goal.
If you would like to provide community information or receive an advertising
media kit, please contact the Gehl's at their office located at 270 East
Main Street, in the Century Building in Canton. You may also contact them
by phone at (770) 704-7443, by e-mail at editor@aroundcanton.com or by
fax at (770) 704-0147.
