Cherokee County School District Adopts Modified Calendar

Jan McCranie was recently awarded "Volunteer of the Year" by the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce. Jan also received this award in 2000 and 2001. The Chamber presents this award to the member who has accumulated the most points throughout the year. Members receive points for attending ground breaking and ribbon cutting ceremonies and participating in member breakfasts, new member coffees and business after hours meetings. Jan also signed up 27 new members to the Chamber in 2003, making her cumulative grand total 101. Jan said, "I believe in what the Chamber does. It greatly benefits new business owners." She describes her role as a liaison between a new business and the Chamber of Commerce. Jan has been a member of the Chamber for five years and is a Sales Director for Mary Kay Cosmetics.

County Elections Building Receives New Name

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners recently named the elections building, the "Albert Stone Elections Building." Mr. Stone is the current Elections Chairman and according to State Representative Chip Rogers, Mr. Stone embodies the character and decency that makes Cherokee County a great place to live. "He is a gentleman of the highest caliber and is truly deserving of this recognition. Mike Byrd, J.J. Biello, Ilona Sanders, Harry Johnston and Derek Good made the right decision," stated Rogers.

Local Business to Offer Computer Classes

America's Real Estate Academy, Inc. (AREA) is scheduled to open a third location in February. The new facility, which is located in the Cherokee Commons shopping center on Highway 92 in Acworth, will offer computer courses for anyone wanting to learn. The courses will involve a minimal cost and is ideal for anyone who wishes to learn computer basics and today's technology. AREA is owned and operated by Towne Lake residents Nora Monahan and Dick Viti and offers classes in appraisal, real estate sales, home inspection, pre and post licensing and continuing education. The Cherokee County School Board unanimously voted to approve a modified calendar for the 2004 - 2005 school year. The modifications will be implemented over a two-year period. The 2004 - 2005 calendar will see the school year begin August 9 and end May 27. Thanksgiving break will be five days instead of three, and the schools will see a week-long break in February 2005. The 2005 - 2006 calendar will include the full modifications which entails cutting the summer break by two weeks and adding a week-long break in September, Thanksgiving week and February. Christmas and Spring breaks will remain the same.

School Boundary Meeting Scheduled

The Cherokee County School District will hold a boundary redrawing meeting at Woodstock Middle School on Thursday, February 12 from 7 - 9 p.m. The meeting will be led by Russ Sims, Planning and Forecasting Coordinator for the District. County Commissioners Participate in MLK Breakfast

The Cherokee County Commissioners recently participated in the 6th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Breakfast. The breakfast was sponsored by Allen Temple A.M.E. Church of Woodstock and Hillside United Methodist Church. The theme for this this year's breakfast was "The Time is Now." Casey Roberts, the MLK, Jr. Unity Breakfast event coordinator said, "This event serves as a symbol of hope, love, peace and unity and is an opportunity to embrace diversity and our differences." The breakfast featured key note speaker Dr. Ida Love, Deputy Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction for the State Department of Education. The event was free, but donations were accepted to benefit the MLK, Jr. Unity Scholarship Fund.
