Scouting in Cherokee
County is alive and well and enjoyed by hundreds of girls and boys. The
Boy Scouts, founded in 1910, will celebrate its 94th anniversary this
year. The Girl Scouts is the world's preeminent organization dedicated
solely to girls and strives to build character and skills for success
in the real world. Both organizations believe in service to their Country
and God, honor and of course, having fun. Joining the scouts is easy.
Both organizations hold membership drives at the local elementary schools
where interested boys can join a Pack or Troop and girls can join a Troop.
The TowneLaker posed some frequently asked questions below to two
local leaders, Scott Nolan, Scoutmaster of Troop 641 and Linda Crow, leader
of Cadette Girl Scout Troop 5809.
What if a child misses the school sign
up or decides later that he/she wants to join?
Linda: Girls are welcome to join anytime.
If a girl misses the school member drive, Linda advises her parents to
contact the Girl Scouts of Northwest Georgia at (404) 527-7500 or visit
www.girlscouts.org, and the Council will put them in touch with a local
unit.

Scott: The
Boy Scouts run year-round, and Scott is always recruiting new members
throughout the year. If a boy wants to join mid-year, his parents can
sign him up at any of the local Packs or Troops. District Units can be
found by visiting www.cpds.org.
If a boy or girl joins Scouting but
later quits for whatever reason, can he/she rejoin at the same level he/she
left at?
Linda: Girl Scouting welcomes all
girls at all times. However, due to the lack of adult volunteers, a girl
may need to be put on a Troop's waiting list until an opening occurs or
an adult volunteers to be a Troop Leader and forms a new Troop. The girls
will join their age-appropriate group and are not required to play "catch-up"
on missed badges and awards.
Scott: Of course! Boy Scouting is
self-paced so a boy who rejoins can pick up where he left off.
Scouting can be a great addition to any child's
repertoire of activities, and to show how much fun all our local Boy and
Girl Scout Troops have, we're featuring some fun photos from the past
year.
