State
House District 20 Candidate Gina Carr recently announced that she will
contribute her entire legislative salary to local charities if she is
elected to the General Assembly. After careful contemplation of many worthy
local organizations, the board of directors of "Friends for Gina Carr"
has decided that Carr's state representative salary will be divided between
the HOPE Center, the Cherokee Child Advocacy Council, MUST Ministries,
Cherokee FOCUS, the Cherokee County Humane Society, and the two district
high schools, Etowah and Woodstock.
"I've
always been a big believer in giving back to the community," said Carr.
"I've supported local causes ever since we opened our doors at CENTURY
21 Advantage almost ten years ago. It is only natural that I would continue
that tradition in this latest endeavor."
"I
want to support the incredible work being done by the HOPE Center to help
women with unplanned pregnancies," explained Carr. "This non-profit Christian
organization exists to support women and men with very difficult decisions
in a very loving, non-judgmental way. Because of their efforts, many families
learn how to work through the maze of complex issues to preserve lives
and families."
While
serving as a member of the Development Authority of Cherokee County, Carr
voted to approve the donation of land in the Canton-Cherokee Business
and Industrial Park by Universal Alloy for the construction of a county
emergency children's shelter. "As a former foster parent, I know first-hand
the emotional trauma that a child experiences when he or she is suddenly
uprooted from everything he or she knows as home. I applaud the Advocacy
Council for bringing this need to the forefront of the community's attention,"
said Carr.
According
to Carr, the other choices were logical ones for Friends for Gina Carr.

"MUST
Ministries is the granddaddy of service organizations in the county. Cherokee
FOCUS is a relative newcomer that has made a major impact on the community
in a short period of time. Of course, everyone knows that I have a big
heart for homeless animals so the Cherokee County Humane Society made
the list. Finally, a big reason that I am running is to bring a business
person's perspective to helping solve our problems with public education.
While a lot of people focus on the elementary schools, the high schools
seem to be forgotten sometimes. That's why we chose Etowah and Woodstock
High Schools."
"I
will continue to support other local charities through special fundraisers,
volunteer efforts, and ongoing corporate donations," said Carr. Over the
years, Carr's companies, primarily CENTURY 21 Advantage and The TowneLaker
magazine, have supported many worthy causes in Cherokee County. In 1996,
Carr sponsored the first community parade and festival in southwest Cherokee.
Now known as The Cherokee Jubilee, this event has raised thousands of
dollars for local charities over the years, including Habitat for Humanity,
March of Dimes, and Everyday Angels.
Earlier
this year, Carr worked with other community leaders to create a black-tie
fundraiser, the Fur Ball, which raised over $5,000 for the Cherokee County
Humane Society. Most recently, Carr co-founded two new non-profit corporations:
SMASH, a children's visual arts magazine; and People4Pets, a resource
organization for companion animal welfare groups.
"I
love getting people together to work towards great causes," said Carr.
"As a state representative, I look forward to being able to serve my community
at an even greater level. After all, there is only so much a person can
do as a private citizen."
