Around Towne
by Susan Kyle

As you have probably guessed, I'm back. I have resumed my position as full-time Managing Editor of The TowneLaker and Sixes Living Magazine. I have remained involved in the magazines serving as Managing Editor since my departure as Editor in November of 2002. It's great to be back!

This part of Georgia certainly dodged a hurricane bullet with Frances and Ivan roaring through the state over the past month. Other than the kids receiving an unexpected three-day weekend, thankfully things were pretty much back to normal the day after Ivan reared his ugly head, including the usual 20 car line up at Starbucks drive thru in the morning.

What's New in
the Towne Lake Area

Residents will soon have a new magazine to enjoy with their coffee, whether it's from Starbucks, Woodstock Coffee House, Serene Bean or Mr. Coffee. In October, Around Woodstock magazine will debut as the newest addition of the Around Town Community Magazine (ATCM) family. Around Woodstock is a franchise of ATCM and a sister magazine of The TowneLaker, Sixes Living and Around Canton. Around Woodstock is owned and operated by southwest Cherokee residents Tracy and Herb Sims and Cherryl Greenman. Cherryl is the former Editor of The TowneLaker and Sixes Living Magazine. For editorial submissions, ad rates and information or distribution localities call Cherryl at (770) 924-3131. The TowneLaker and Sixes Living Magazine wish former Editor, Cherryl Greenman, our best in her new venture.

New residents to the Towne Lake area can look forward to A Towne Lake Welcome. This business is a welcoming service for new homeowners in the Towne Lake area and is owned by area residents Jennifer Towner, Dawn Phelps and Barbara Bonatucci. A Towne Lake Welcome offers a unique advertising opportunity for the many businesses in the area. New homeowners will be informed about local businesses through the most effective method, a personal face-to-face conversation. A Towne Lake Welcome will begin greeting new homeowners in October. You can reach them at (770) 592-5009.

For those of you who love hot dogs, Hot Dog Heaven recently opened in downtown Woodstock. The eatery is owned by Woodstock residents Becky and Barney Wentzel and features Chicago Vienna Beef and Chicago-style hot dogs. Next time you're strolling through downtown, stop by for a quick bite.

Sport Clips recently held its grand opening. This new men and boys' hair cuttery is located in the Towne Lake Center on Towne Lake Parkway between the Dollar Tree and Slender Lady. Sport Clips operators Linda and Carmen Panzica provide high quality haircuts in a fun environment, complete with TVs tuned to sports or other male-friendly shows (Monster Garage?).

Frankie's Italian Ristorante & Pizzeria, located in the Towne Lake Village Center, will change its name to Tedesco's on October 1. The change is for trademark purposes only and the owners, management, menu and recipes will remain the same.

The northeast and southeast corners of Bells Ferry Road and Eagle Drive will soon be a flurry of activity. Streetside Developers is developing, in two phase, Streetside at Towne Lake. Both sites are currently pre-leasing retail space. For leasing information, please call (770) 818-4220.

Teske Law Firm, LLC has moved to new offices at The Crossings Office Park in Towne Lake (behind the new Publix). The firm is owned by Towne Lake resident Vildan Teske. Her law practice focuses on wills, trusts, estate planning, and probate.

What's Ongoing in
the Towne Lake Area

The hurricanes did create some havoc with the Wal-Mart Supercenter construction, but the outer building is now complete. Work is being completed steadily on the interior,

meaning the Towne Lake area won't have to wait much longer for the smiley-faced price slasher.

A collective cheer in the Towne Lake area will be heard when the widening of Eagle Drive commences this month. The project, originally slated to begin in July, had been delayed due to financial issues with the DOT. The road project is scheduled to be completed by early 2006.

Trick or Treating

Although the City of Woodstock and Cherokee County do not take any position on the time or date of Trick-or-Treating, Towne Lake area residents have traditionally Trick-or-Treated on October 31 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. For information about individual neighborhood parties, contact your community's social committee chairperson.

Towne Lake Diner - Serene Bean
by Kara Kiefer

Serene by definition means quiet and tranquil, and serenity was what Serene Bean's owner, Lara Randall, was looking for. She had been laid off from her public relations job and knew she didn't want another job where she had to commute. She wanted to work in Woodstock, where she lived. She loves the charm, quaintness and small town feel of downtown Woodstock. Lara had been contemplating opening a catering business, and when Alida Lois vacated her showroom, the Serene Bean was born.

The Bean, as Lara affectionately refers to it, is a café, but it is so much more than that. She and chef Rachel Minick worked to prepare a simple yet quality menu of sandwiches, soups and salads. The specialty of the house is the chicken salad, but one of the best parts of the menus is custom creating your sandwich. It's called "Build Your Own," and patrons can do just that from selecting their meat, bread, sauces, veggies and cheese. It truly is "your way." The Bean also offers homemade soups and salads to round out the menu. And of course, there's the coffee, smoothies, lattes and desserts.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the coffee. Lara gets her beans from Coffee A.M.com, which is an online coffee retailer but happens to be based in Woodstock, which allows The Bean to support the local economy. The Bean offers 12 varieties of brewed coffee as well as specialty coffees, which are made with Lavazza espresso. Smoothies and frappes round out the beverage menu.

The Bean offers gourmet take out catering options for private or company functions. The catering is designed to appeal to those who want quality selections, which are a step above grocery store platters.

The atmosphere at The Bean completes the experience. Lara's husband, Bill, is an architect and helped create the warm, comfortable setting. There are plenty of places to sit, by yourself or with a group, and for those who need to work, the Bean offers free wireless Internet access. On Saturday nights, the Bean features a wide variety of local musicians - a perfect way to end a dinner out or an early movie.

The Serene Bean is the perfect respite to our harried lifestyles. Serenity is only moments away!
