Local
Author Speaks at
Real Estate Expo
Towne
Lake resident and author, Christine Karpinski, was recently invited to
speak at the Real Estate Expo, which was held in New York City. Other
invitees included Donald Trump, Rudy Giuliani, Suze Orman and Rich
Dad, Poor Dad author Robert Kiyosaki. Christine has published a book
titled, How to Rent Vacation Properties by Owner: The Complete Guide
to Buy, Manage, Furnish, Rent, Maintain and Advertise Your Vacation Rental
Investment, which is available at local bookstores nationwide as well
as at all major online book sellers.
Christine
was invited based on the success of her book, which is currently ranked
third in its category for bestsellers. She was a featured columnist in
Gulf Coast Condo Owner Magazine and has been featured on several
national TV news shows.
Christine
got into the book writing business purely by accident. She knew she could
not afford to purchase a vacation home and hire a management company to
handle the renting of the property. As an affordable alternative, she
decided to "rent by owner" and was so successful at it, others wanted
to know how to do it. Her book was published in 2004.
Of
her experience in New York, Christine said, "It was a privilege and an
honor to be put into the same category as some of the top name real estate
experts. I felt like a star for the weekend, but when I got home, Cinderella
had to go back to scrubbing floors!"
Christine
will be holding a book sale/signing at Barnes and Noble on Barrett Parkway
on January 18 at 7 p.m.

Yard
Sale Raises Funds for Local Resident's Medical Costs
Residents
of the Towne Lake area got the opportunity to clean out their garages
and help a friend in need at the same time. Lynn Laney, Vice President
of Laney International Travel, needs a liver transplant as a result of
a birth defect complicated by a blood transplant several years ago. She
is the mother of an eight-year-old son, Geoffry. A liver transplant can
cost upwards of $200,000.
Phyllis
(Hazie) Hazekamp, a Laney family friend, organized a yard sale, which
was recently held at Kleven Boston Elementary School. The yard sale was
held to raise funds for the transplant. The sale included donated "treasures,"
vendor booths, a bake sale, a raffle and lots of great food. The sale
raised more than $6,000.
Hazie
and the multitude of volunteers were extremely grateful to the community
for the way it pulled together to help a young mother in need. "There
are so many individuals and businesses who donated their time, merchandise
and services. The Laney family and I are forever thankful and amazed at
the phenomenal success of the yard sale," she said.
Lynn's
condition remains critical. She has been placed on the transplant list
and is grateful for the prayers, well wishes, and donations. A fund has
been set up at SunTrust Bank, located at the Publix at Rose Creek. To
donate to the fund, please send your tax-deductible donation to SunTrust
Bank, 4403 Towne Lake Parkway, Woodstock, GA 30189, payable to the Lynn
Laney Medical Fund, Attention Josh Baldwin.

Rewards Good Grades
Towne
Lake orthodontist, Dr. Michael Williams, began an incentive program rewarding
students for good grades. During every grading period, any Cherokee County
school district student who achieves A's and B's is eligible to be in
a drawing for a gift basket, typically $50 in value. The contest is open
to any student who meets the criteria, not just Dr. Williams' patients.
Matthew Bravo, a student at Liberty Elementary School, won the gift basket
for the most recent grading period. Dr. Williams' office is located at
2230 Towne Lake Parkway.
Doggie
University - Excellent Volunteer Opportunity for Dog
Lovers of All Ages
When
considering a new four-legged family member, the Cherokee County Animal
Shelter is the perfect place to find that new member. However, one of
the more common obstacles in families adopting Shelter dogs is the dogs'
manners and/or lack of training. Thanks to Doggie University, that obstacle
is becoming less and less of an issue. This is where you come in!
Doggie
University is a joint collaboration between the Cherokee County Humane
Society (CCHS) and the Cherokee County Animal Shelter. The goal of Doggie
U is to provide the Shelter dogs with at least some training to minimize
bad behavior. According to Doggie U Director, Bob O'Brien, many dogs are
turned into the Shelter each year for behavioral issues, which could be
solved with proper training.
Doggie
University is a great volunteer opportunity for all dog lovers. While
the age requirement to volunteer at the Shelter is 16 years old, this
is a great activity for parents and "tweens" (10 - 12 years old) to do
together. Doggie U takes place every Saturday at 10:15 a.m. at the Cherokee
County Animal Shelter. Bob commented, "It's very rewarding to see 'your'
special dog that you've been working with get adopted."
For additional information
about Doggie U, please visit www.doggieu.org or email doggieu@comcast.net
or call Bob O'Brien at (678) 445-4544.
