Charlie Pineo

Charlie Pineo is a man of many talents and interests and devotes his time in a variety of ways. He is a business consultant, enjoys traveling and has a multitude of interesting hobbies. He also volunteers his time for several organizations, one of which is the Boy Scouts as an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 994. Mark Hess, Scoutmaster for Troop 994 nominated Charlie for Pathfinder based on Charlie's service to the Troop. "If there is a free moment in Charlie's schedule, you can bet he is involved in a scouting activity someplace," stated Mark.

Charlie first got involved with Scouts when he joined the Cub Scouts as a boy. He attained the coveted title of Eagle Scout in high school. After a scouting hiatus, Charlie got back into the organization when his son, Charlie, now 16, joined as a Cub Scout in 1994. He became the Assistant Scoutmaster when Charlie advanced to Boy Scout level. Mark said that as Assistant Scoutmaster, Charlie has taught many skills to the young men of the Troop, including character development, leadership, outdoor skills, First Aid training and water related skills. Those skills paid off when Charlie and Mark took ten Scouts to the high adventure camp, Philomont Scout Camp in 2003. The boys participated in a 70-mile backpacking trek, which was a once in a lifetime opportunity for many of them.

In addition to his work at the Troop level, Charlie also finds time to work with the district and council levels of scouting as the Aquatics Director/Trainer for the Southern Region. In this role, Charlie teaches other adult volunteers seven water-related activities, including swimming, life saving, water skiing and canoeing. These adults will then lead the aquatics programs within their own Troops. Charlie also is the Vice Chairman for the aquatics program at the Scout facility, Camp Allatoona. Camp Allatoona teaches aquatic training for Boy and Venture Scouts, including boating, lifesaving and CPR. And speaking of CPR, Charlie also volunteers for the American Red Cross as a CPR, Automatic Electronic Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid Instructor. Charlie estimated that he's taught more than 100 people CPR within the last year.

The reason Charlie gives so much to the Scouts is simple - youth. "Serving the youth is one of my ministries in life. I enjoy giving the boys a chance to be involved in the Scout programs - get them outdoors and get them active. Scouting gives young boys a strong character base, which is valuable to any youth or adult," he said.

If Charlie finds himself with some spare time, he has several hobbies he enjoys, including mineral collecting, family genealogy, international travel, sailing and snow skiing. Charlie is quite an adventurist as well. For Mark's 40th birthday, he joined him for an unforgettable sky diving adventure and would consider going bungee jumping in the future.

Charlie has been married to Linda, an Episcopal Priest, for 33 years, and in addition to Charlie, they have a 23 year-old daughter Elizabeth.

Charlie plans on staying active with the Scouts when his son graduates high school. "As long as I can be active and the boys can keep up with me, I'll be there," he said.

Thank you, Charlie, for making our community a better place in which to live.
