Around Towne
by Susan Kyle
It
has been said that the holidays are a time of giving. I have learned,
that in the South, everyday is a time of giving. Being a transplanted
Northerner, the one thing I love about the South, is that even though
the weather is warm almost every day, to me it always feels like the holiday
season. No matter where you go or what you do, it seems like a Southerner
wants to give you something. Whether it's directions ("make a right at
the corner where the church was that burned down"), a compliment ("that
hair style is so different, bless her heart") or food ("we're having a
short meeting, bring a dish to pass").
The
one thing I have noticed is that Southerners never go anywhere empty handed.
You have to love the South. Now I know it is not polite to accept an invitation
to something and then show up empty handed, but in the South, they don't
let you leave empty handed either. You end up taking home what you brought
(if there is any left) and then some. Up North, you might get your container
back, and you can be sure it will be empty.
Thank
you to all the Southerners (and transplants) who have given me so much.
You have given me directions, compliments, food and this friendly place
I call home.
