Frequently
Asked Questions
About Boy Scouts
Q:
How old does my son need to be to join Scouts?
A:
Boys are eligible to join Scouting as Tiger Cubs when they enter the first
grade.
Q:
What is the time commitment for parents and the Scout?
A:
Each Den, which consists of Tiger (first graders), Wolf (second graders),
Bear (third graders), Webelos (fourth and fifth graders) and Boy Scouts
meet weekly. Once a month, all the Dens and family members of a particular
Pack meet for a Pack Meeting. There are also Den and Pack activities including
camping, community service projects and fundraising which will require
additional time.
Q:
What is the cost?
A:
Several groups are responsible for supporting the Scouts: the boy and
his parents, the Troop, the chartered organization and the community.
The boys contribute dues, which can vary from den to den, weekly. Troops
also obtain additional income by working on approved money-earning projects.
Members are responsible for purchasing personal equipment and camp fees.
Q:
What if my child misses the school sign up or decides later that he wants
to join?
A:
If a boy wants to join mid-year, his parents can sign him up at any of
the local Packs or Troops. District Units can be found by visiting www.cpds.org.
Q:
If a boy joins Scouting but later quits, can he rejoin at the same level
he left?
A:
Boy Scouting is self-paced so a boy who rejoins can pick up where he left
off.
Frequently
Asked Questions
About Girl Scouts
Q:
How old does my daughter need to be to join Girl Scouts?
A:
Girls can join as young as five years old as a Daisy, which is for five
and six year olds. Brownies are for girls 6 - 8, Junior Girl Scouts are
for ages 8 - 11, and Studio 2B is for girls 11- 17.
Q:
What is the cost?
A:
Girls Scouts of America is open to all girls regardless of their ability
to pay. When necessary, Councils can provide financial assistance to registered
girl or adult members. There is an annual $10 membership payable to Girl
Scouts of the U.S.A. There also may be individual Troop dues based on
planned trips and the ability to pay. Uniforms are not required.
Q:
Will my daughter be required to sell Girl Scout cookies?
A:
Participating in the annual Girl Scout cookie sale is voluntary. Most
troops find that the Girl Scout cookie sale is an ideal fundraising opportunity.
Daisy Scouts do not participate in the cookie sales.
Q:
If my daughter joins Scouting but later quits for whatever reason, can
she rejoin at the same level she left?
A:
Girl Scouting welcomes all girls at all times. However, due to the lack
of adult volunteers, a girl may need to be put on a Troop's waiting list
until an opening occurs or an adult volunteers to be a Troop Leader and
forms a new Troop. The girls will join their age-appropriate group and
are not required to play "catch-up" on missed badges and awards.
