Local Schools Welcome New Leadership

Five local schools will begin the year with new leadership in place: Boston Elementary School, Chapman Intermediate School, E.T. Booth Middle School, Etowah High School, and Polaris Evening School. While some are not new to the Cherokee County School District (CCSD), The TowneLaker would like to welcome each one to their new school and allow the community to know a little bit about each.

Leticia Cline - Boston Elementary School.
Ms. Cline was the principal at Canton Elementary School before moving to Boston. She replaces Dr. Lou Manzella who now is the principal at the newly opened Freedom Middle School. Ms. Cline hopes to continue the academic excellence as well as well as integrate technology and learning at Boston. Ms. Cline was Assistant Principal at Woodstock Elementary School and a teacher at Canton Elementary School for fourteen years. She attended Reinhardt College, and she received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Early Childhood Education from Kennesaw State University.

Dr. Dwight Pullen - Chapman Intermediate School.
Dr. Pullen is the former principal for Polaris Evening School, and he is replacing Joanne May who accepted a position as an Assistant Principal at Woodstock High School. Dr. Pullen is looking forward to working at Chapman Intermediate and putting new curriculum standards in place. Dr. Pullen taught at Cherokee High School for twelve years and was an Assistant Principal at Sequoyah High School for three years. He also ran the County-wide summer school program for three years and was Principal at Teasley Middle School for four and a half years. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Education from Auburn University and a Masters, Specialist and Doctorate from the University of Georgia.

Rick Townsend - E.T. Booth Middle School.Mr. Townsend is new to the Cherokee County School System. He most recently served as principal of Banks County Upper Elementary School in Homer, GA, and he is replacing Ron Dunnavant, who is the new Principal at Etowah High School. Mr. Townsend's goals include helping his students succeed and encouraging parental involvement. He has been in the education field for fifteen years. In addition to his job as principal, he was a teacher at a middle school for six years and an assistant principal at Jefferson High School. Mr. Townsend graduated from Reinhardt College with an Associate's degree in Liberal Arts. He received his Bachelor's degree in Education from the University of Georgia and his Master's from State University of West Georgia. He currently is studying for his Doctorate in School Improvement from West Georgia.

Ron Dunnavant - Etowah High School.
Mr. Dunnavant was the former principal of E.T. Booth Middle School. He replaces outgoing principal, George Alexander who retired at the end of the last school year. He served as E.T. Booth's principal for two years. Prior to coming to the CCSD, Mr. Dunnavant taught at McDonough Christian Academy in Athens, AL where he also served as the head basketball coach and assistant football coach. He then moved to Georgia and taught middle school in Clayton County. He left the education field and worked for a large corporation and eventually opened his own business. He returned to the education field in 1989 and eventually completed his Master's degree in Education from West Georgia College and an Education Specialist degree from Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee. Mr. Dunnavant is excited about his new challenges and looks forward to working with the same students and families that he came to know at Booth.

Dr. Judy Battles - Polaris Evening School.
Dr. Battles took the helm of Polaris in March, 2005. Previously, she served as the principal of Teasley Middle School and Sixes Elementary School. She began her teaching career in Cobb County as a teacher at Mabry Middle School. She also served as an assistant principal at three middle schools and a principal for Griffin Middle School. She received her Bachelor and Master of Science at Florida State University, a Specialist in Educational Administration from State University of West Georgia and her Doctor of Education at the University of Alabama. Dr. Battles hopes to continue the tradition of providing a successful program for high school students who attend an evening program. She also would like to improve student attendance and establish a Polaris North Campus at Cherokee High School during the upcoming school year.
