Etowah Student Participates in Washington Youth Tour
Each year, several electric cooperatives throughout Georgia choose high school delegates to participate in the Washington Youth Tour, held in Washington D.C. This year, 102 students were chosen from across the state, representing 37 electric operatives, to participate in a week-long, all expense paid trip to the Little White House in Warm Springs, GA and the nation's capital. The local cooperative, Cobb EMC, chose three delegates, including Etowah High School (EHS) junior Rebekah Packer. Each interested student had to complete an initial application followed by a quiz pertaining to electric safety/conservation, cooperative facts and Cobb EMC history. The highest scoring student from each high school was then chosen to continue. Those students then competed in an interview night where they were asked impromptu questions. Rebekah was the overall winner of this competition, winning a $1,000 scholarship. Rebekah and her fellow delegates toured the sights of Washington D.C., and she learned that even students have the ability to actively participate in their government. As a delegate, Rebekah had the opportunity to interview for and was granted a paid public relations summer internship with Cobb EMC. The internship provided Rebekah with a lot of hands-on experience in event planning, speaking at meetings and learning new aspects of the business world and public relations. Rebekah is an active student at EHS, participating in numerous groups, including Science Olympiad, Governor's Honors Program, National Honor Society and more. After graduation, Rebekah hopes to attend the University of Georgia and double major in pre-med and Romantic Languages.
