ETOWAH’S MANNING RECEIVES NUMEROUS ACCOLADES
Alicia Manning has had quite a high school basketball career. When she was a freshman, Etowah High School Lady Eagles captured a State title. In 2007, she was named as the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Player of the Year, and she was one of 36 players chosen to play in the 2008 summer USA Basketball Youth Development Festival. Manning, a senior guard, recently was named to the 2008 McDonald’s All-American Game roster. She was one of three Georgia players and the only Georgia female to be selected to these all-American boys and girls games which were held in Milwaukee. Most recently, Manning received the prestigious 2007 — 08 Gatorade Georgia Girls Basketball Player of the Year award. This particular award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the court. As a result of this award, she was a finalist for the Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year. Manning signed a letter of intent to the University of Tennessee where she will be attending this fall.
YONG IN MARTIAL ARTS COMPETITION TEAM COMPETES IN TOURNAMENT
The Yong In Martial Arts Competition Team recently competed in the UTA National Open tournament. They brought home top honors in both the forms competition and sparring. The team was awarded four bronze, one silver and four gold medals in forms. K’anen Grizzle also won the Grand Championship trophy for his forms demonstration. Yong In also dominated in the sparring competition, winning two third place, two second place and five first place trophies. Congratulations!
CHEROKEE MAT RATS COMPETE IN 2008 KID’S STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
It has been quite an exciting year for the Cherokee Mat Rats. The wrestling club competed in the 2008 Kid’s State Championship. They were named the 2008 Bantam Division State Champions, won fifth place in the 2008 Novice Division category and also were named the 2008 overall number five team in Georgia. The Cherokee Mat Rats won the Team Championship Trophy for the 8U division. The Mat Rats would like to thank Coach Roosevelt White, Sr. for all his efforts and dedication.
WOODSTOCK AND ETOWAH TENNIS RECAP
Etowah High School and Woodstock High School recently completed their tennis seasons. At Woodstock, the boys’ team enjoyed making school history by having the best season so far. The team went 7 — 6 overall and 4 — 4 in region play. The girls’ team enjoyed equal success with the same 7 — 6 overall record and 4 — 4 in region play. Both teams traveled to Kennesaw Mountain High School for the first round of Region playoffs, but both were defeated by a solid Kennesaw team. Etowah High School boys dominated their region with a 12 — 1 overall record and 8 — 0 region record. The girls’ team was equally impressive with an 11 — 2 overall record, including a first-ever victory over Marist High School. The girls also finished 8 — 0 in the region. Both Etowah teams dominated in the Region tournament, advancing to State. Congratulations to all teams!
TOWNE LAKE EQUESTRIAN CLUB SWEEPS COMPETITION
Towne Lake Equestrian Club recently swept the beginner equestrian competition. Taylor Wilson, 11, daughter of Catherine and Scott Wilson of Woodstock, riding Jack Frost, was awarded Champion of the Walk Trott Division. Alyssa Robinson, age 11, daughter of Michelle Alred and Greg Robinson, riding Lil’Romeo, placed second in two Walk Trott Divisions. Also competing for Towne Lake Equestrian was Cathy Vollenweider, age 12, daughter of Mona and William Vollenweider of Woodstock, riding Found the Rhythm, placed in the Walk Trott Canter 10 and over division. All students were trained and coached by Towne Lake Equestrian staff trainer, Robin Brooks.
ETOWAH LACROSSE ATHLETES SIGN LETTERS OF INTENT
Two Etowah High School senior Lacrosse players, Mark Tortorello and John LeMoine, recently signed letters of intent. Both signed with Tennessee Wesleyan College. Mark and John are the first boys from Etowah to sign for Lacrosse. Congratulations!
BOOTH SOCCER TEAMS ATTAIN CHAMPIONSHIPS
The E.T. Booth Middle School girls’ soccer team recently won the middle school championship with a 5 — 0 victory over Dean Rusk Middle School. The girls ended the season as the only undefeated team with no ties and four shut outs. The boys’ team also won their game, 3 — 0 against Teasley Middle School. Congratulations to both teams!
