TLBA Member Spotlight
Towne Lake Arts Center
“Think! Listen! Have a good time and tell the story!” As they stand in a circle before a performance, this is what the cast says in unison under the guidance of founding Artistic Director of the Towne Lake Arts Center (TLAC) Gay L. Grooms. “Actually, this is pretty good advice no matter what you’re doing, especially the listening part,” said Ms. Grooms.
Cast members from the critically acclaimed production of "The Sound of Music" May 2008.
TLAC opened in February 2002 on a wing and a prayer utilizing Ms. Groom’s savings account as start up funds. “We’ve never had a business loan. We rely on revenues from ticket sales, camps and classes, donations from the community, and we’ve been very blessed,” said Ms. Grooms. TLAC is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and has been a member of the TLBA for approximately four years.
The Center does a full season of plays and musicals for children, families and adults. “Though we’re best known for our high quality children’s plays, our evening productions can’t be beat. All of our shows are very professionally done and have cast members ages 8 to 88!” explained Ms. Grooms.
A constant stream of volunteers and professionals with a wide variety of skills has made TLAC a driving force for the arts in Cherokee County. Virtually everything in the building has been created or donated by generous actors, parents, patrons and businesses.
But despite TLAC’s charitable status, TLAC is also well known as a donor to schools, churches, libraries and civic organizations (including the TLBA), providing programming, free tickets as door prizes, silent auction items or raffle gifts. “We frequently speak at Cultural Arts days in the local schools and for Career Days, too. The students seem to enjoy hearing about the many activities we have going on all year. And of course, our Spring 2008 Improv Troupe provided a wonderful free program that encouraged creative writing to any Cherokee County school that asked us to come,” said Ms. Grooms.
