So, I’m sitting there watching Gossip Girl, and BOOM… the lights go out. Several weeks ago, the Towne Lake area experienced something we haven’t seen in several years — a total blackout. And not just for a few minutes but for hours. I learned a few things during the blackout. First, I learned that cell phones make pretty adequate flashlights, at least enough light so you can find the bathroom and the real flashlight. I also learned that we still had our “emergency” candles from 1999 (remember Y2K?). I learned that I am way too dependent on fans and air conditioning to get a decent night’s sleep and that when we don’t have either, the dog needs to sleep elsewhere so I can’t hear him licking. I learned that it’s been way too long since I played a board game with my kids as most of them had missing pieces or the word “Junior” at the end. I also learned that sometimes it’s nice to sit amongst the glowing candles with your kids, just being…

WHATS NEW?

It’s not exactly new but it hasn’t been occurring for two months…. That’s right, school is about to be in session once again, starting August 4. Please drive cautiously throughout your neighborhoods as there will be many “newbies” starting school and riding the bus for the first time. See our Back to School section starting on page 62.
Towne Lake Driving School now is offering State approved Defensive Driving Courses. The six-hour classroom course is taught on weekends and is available to the first 35 people who enroll for each class. For more information, please call (678) 494-2200.

Hair stylist and Around Town — The TowneLaker contributing writer Marcia Brooks and Laura Spencer are moving from Studio 301 to Hair Quarters, located in the Towne Lake Village Center (home of Around Town — The TowneLaker). To make an appointment, please call them on their own personal line, (770) 516-7616.

Knuckle Up Fitness recently opened a new location at 6380 Bells Ferry Road, just south of Wal-Mart. For more information, please call (678) 213-2541 or visit www.knuckleupfitness.com.

We’ve held our Grandparents of the Year contest for several years, and before, the grandparent (s) needed to reside in our readership area. Well, not anymore! We realize there are a lot of GREAT grandparents who live outside the Towne Lake area, and we want you to nominate them! We ask that the nominator reside in the Towne Lake area, but that’s the only residency restriction. So get those nominations written and sent to us (see page 15 for complete rules and contact information) by August 11.

WHATS CLOSED?

We are very sad to report the closing of Sweet Peas, a Darling Shoppe. After five years in business, the children’s boutique has fallen victim to the economy, according to owner Debra Childers. August will be their last month in business, and everything must go. Sweet Peas is located at the intersection of Ridge and Sixes Roads in Canton.

WHATS COMING?

Madison Pointe, located at I-575 and Towne Lake Parkway has seen a flurry of activity as of late. Zucca Bar and Pizzeria is planned to be open very shortly (if not already by press time). They will serve lunch and dinner. Their menus and other information can be viewed at www.zuccaonline.com. This is right up my alley!

Bokitas Tapas Bar has begun construction at Madison Pointe. Information regarding scheduled completion date was unavailable as of press time, but they do have a website, www.bokitas.net (still under construction as of press time).

LA Fitness is coming to Towne Lake to the mixed-use development located at Putnam Ford Road and Eagle Drive. The fitness facility, which, by the way, is the third fitness facility within a two-mile radius, won’t open until 2009 or 2010 according to their corporate office.

WHATS CHANGING?

China Bay II, located in the Towne Lake Promenade (Starbuck’s) is under new ownership and a new name. The new name will be Izumi Asian Bistro, and they will offer Japanese, Thai and Chinese cuisine. The owner said they will renovate the facility and hope to be open in August.
